"We are so bloody marvellous and everyone else is wrong"

I've never read such a load of judgemental codswallop

Branded Winnie the Poo equipment - OMG!!

it's not even very well put together and seems entirely based on anecdotal evidence and his observations of life in "nappy" valley. A decent chunk of research would make his arguments look vaguely balanced at least.

As it stands he comes across as smug, self-satisfied and opinionated. Blah.

ihavenewsockson · 07/06/2010 17:03

What a complete twunt.

Alicetheinvisible · 07/06/2010 17:04

Twat.

Would love me, i look about 14, pg with second child

waitingforbedtime · 07/06/2010 17:04

What a load of bollocks. I got pregnant with ds at 24, so what? I met dh at 19, finished my degree and had a baby because thats how it worked out for me. If I hadnt met him until I was 35 then I would ahve ahd kids later (all being well).

Just because he wasnt mature enough or financially stable enough to have kids doesnt mean no-one is.

I am one of the youngest mums at my son's nursery and sometimes feel like people look down their nose at us a wee bit but I honestly couldnt care less! One man said to us 'I know we have a lovely big house but we're just like you, you know, we can talk to anyone' - we smiled politely and then laughed at home.

Poor girl and her Winnie the pooh though.

dawntigga · 07/06/2010 17:04

Have already read the article, tbh I thought it was a bit sanctimonious but I also thought it was refreshing not to get bashed in the press for a change.

MathsMadMummy · 07/06/2010 17:05

OMG!!!

Can't believe I got through that without stabbing the laptop.

And FWIW my DH is 42, much older than me (23), so I'm not opposed to older parents either!

TrillianAstra · 07/06/2010 17:05

Tigga - it's just a shame that no-one can seem to write anything nice about older mums without having to attack younger mums.

mrsshackleton · 07/06/2010 17:06

Just to redress the balance myself, I am a 40-something mum (was in my 30s when I had them but for the sake of argument ...)

I have no patience

My dcs are appalling faddy eaters (unlike Andrew's dd)

I still selfishly have a career which I devote a lot of time to that probably should be spent drinking coffee in Costa with my antenatal group

I believe we have some branded Winnie the Poo goods in the house (OK, my mil gave them to us but I should have thrown them out immediately)

So they're not all perfect.

Bronze, you're right. The media has been slagging off older mums like someone had declared open season. And now the same media has placed one article putting forward the opposite view.

His comments on younger mums are unhelpful and silly but his comments on what older mums have to offer did start to redress the balance.

squeaver · 07/06/2010 17:06

Saw the title and thought it must have been the one in the S Times yesterday "we potty trained at 7 months" but this is just as bad.

Ladyanonymous · 07/06/2010 17:07

What would he have made of me....at 26 had three under 5's by two different fathers - neither of whom I am with.....chavtastic me

MathsMadMummy · 07/06/2010 17:07
Missus84 · 07/06/2010 17:08

It would have been fine for him to talk about the advantages of being older parents (and there are many) but totally unnecessary to do so by criticising younger, poorer parents.

mrsshackleton · 07/06/2010 17:08

Oh, yeah, I meant to link to that too squeaver but I am an exhausted older mum (middle class though, phew) so didn't have the energy

Please can there be a ban on men writing anything about fatherhood

OP posts:
MathsMadMummy · 07/06/2010 17:09

I don't think it does anything to redress the balance though - he's representing his age group (for want of a better term!) VERY badly.

BessieBoots · 07/06/2010 17:10

*MathsMadMummy, you and your DDH have the same age gap as me and my OH. Fun, innit?

TBH, this guy sounds like a nob. Has ishoos regarding his own upbringing.

Morloth · 07/06/2010 17:10

I really like Pooh Bear baby kit.

Am 32 though, does that make it OK?

DS2 got some bacon fat the other day (he was feeding, as was I and I dropped it on him), he looked like all his Christmases had come at once.

bronze · 07/06/2010 17:11

apart from Nick Clegg

bronze · 07/06/2010 17:11

cor that delayed posting I meant that to mrsshakleton

bronze · 07/06/2010 17:12

with a 'c'

NanKid · 07/06/2010 17:12

Redress what balance?@Kathy

The 'sniping at women in the media' balance?

Let's not just snipe at old mums, let's snipe at young mums and poor mums, too. In fact, fuck it. Smug journalist dads of the world unite and let's sock it to all of these bitches who dare to procreate and do Other Stuff With Their Lies Too!

Fibilou · 07/06/2010 17:13

Shame that, despite his education and superciliousness, he can't spell Winnie the Pooh

Alicetheinvisible · 07/06/2010 17:13

I don't think you can generalise that all older mothers are good/bad because.... or all young mothers are good/bad because...

I know some young mothers who are amazing, and would have been amazing had they waited til they were in their 40's, and i know some that are the typical teenage mum stereotype.

The same as i know some older mothers who are horrendously neurotic/helicopter (or whatever its called) parents and some who are fab and so chilled out.

You really can't generalise, it is not possible. It all boils down to judgyness doesn't it?

Morloth · 07/06/2010 17:14

Don't forget those selfish cows who decide not to procreate at all, they are bad as well.

CaptainWinky · 07/06/2010 17:14

You. Smug. Patronising. Bastard.
