Not to want to lend my friend anymore books

A while ago I lent a friend a book which was a little precious to me-it was a copy of another friend of mines debut novel, which i bought to support her (she is well on her way to becoming "a proper author") and I wanted to get as many of my mates to read her book as possible for some exposure for her.

This friend I lent it to subsequently went and lost it-lent it to someone else and I have never seen it since. She was very very apologetic and it wasn't a problem because I have since contacted my author freind and she has replaced my copy free of charge and she has signed it this time as well so that as a bonus.

However she has just asked to borrow some more books and is being a bit pushy about it-I dont want to lend her anything especially as these books she now wants to borrow are not as replaceable as the other. What should I say to her?

Manda25 - what Tinypawz said!!

I am amazed at how many people I have lent books to who have lent them to someone else - is this not just downright rude?

This happened with a really expensive text book I lent an ex who lent it to his daugheter who at the time was in a relationship with a violent bloke who smashed up/destroyed everything in his path meaning she moved every few months leaving half the contents of her house behind her - pissed off was not the word

I did move her out myself the final time after spending a whole night persuading her - never did find that bloody book though - was going to text and ask - but I still own him 50 quid so

agree, i hate lending out books but if you want to remain on good terms I would phrase the refusal in terms of your own fussiness rather than her carelessness if you know what I mean. tis hard though.

Ha ha - I hate lending my own books. And yet, I've always encouraged my DC to share.

BariatricObama - ONLY books!

My books map my life - cheapy trashy novels are disposable but proper books are to be treasured and cared for.

BariatricObama · 07/06/2010 18:21

yes only books.

Just tell her you lost x books last year when people didn't return them. So, sorry, but you don't lend them out any more.

Bariatric at only books!

BariatricObama · 07/06/2010 18:29

lol @ book horror!

LoveBeing34 · 07/06/2010 18:33

As someone who has lost a book that was lent to me, I would never ask that person again and would certainly understand if they said they would not lend me books again.

Do not lend any book you really care about!

I learnt this lesson at an early age when I lent a book to my Dad - and he read it and then gave it to a jumble sale!I was gobsmacked, and I can't understand now why he did it,he and Mum had a houseful of books so it isn't as if he was a "read it once, then get rid of it" type!
I will only lend to my best friend - even though she once dropped a book of mine in the bath...she did replace it though

I don't lend books at all anymore, as I never seem to get them back. The condition doesn't bother me too much as I practically devour a book when I read it - break the spine, dog-ear the pages etc - but I only do that with my own books that I have bought.

I would never never lend a book that I couldn't afford to lose forever - so I never lend books!

(BTW - I work in a library!)

I keep my favourite books in the bedroom so no-one is tempted! I don't lend anyone my favourite cd either (cardboard cover) but will happily loan dh for diy purposes!
