Then I would have a big sign made up that said, 'Oh fucking grow up' in sight of all the customers as they leave and of the shop owner while they go about their day.

AIBU?

we went to a friend's dd's 1st birthday party yesterday and her dad had done a stand of cupcakes as a birthday cake - they were lovely. was also dd's first icing

though i'm with you on the ugly scones too - where do you live again? fancy meeting up for an ugly cake?

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2010 17:39

Did you see Junior Apprentice doing their cupcakes? Personalised ones, done really craply.

I think they are a bit poncey, but I will eat them if givemn for free. I went to a cupcake shop in Lomndomn once, and it was very poncey.

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2010 17:41

London.

Humdrumhappiness · 06/06/2010 17:47

Mmmm caaaake....dribble...

lolapoppins · 06/06/2010 17:52

Oh my gosh, we went to the poncey town we used to live in last weekend, new retro style cupcake shop had opened. We went in to try it out (don't get stuff like that up here in the sticks) and I swear to got they were just tesco blueberry muffins covered in a thick, nasty coating of red icing. With a jelly sweat on top. For a FIVER. Shop was rammed with parents with buggies and Sunday papers lapping them up. What a joke.

SloanyPony · 06/06/2010 17:54

People do buy them for their children, you know (regarding the "grow up" comment)

southeastastra · 06/06/2010 17:56

yanbu - i think they're sickly, i prefer a scone too, even a rock cake. do cupcake shops sell those?

i've never seen on i don't think.

Elgoogreven · 06/06/2010 18:33

Better idea, instead of the big sign, or possibly as well as, as i still think that's a fabulous idea, i'll open a shop called Ugly Scones.
SPB is that you stealth? i'm north of you now.

Sorry, no cupcakes shops opening here, i'm just BU for the hell of it. It's sunday. The recession is still on. and i've never even seen a cupcake shop

thought you were, yes it's me
OI'll come to the opening of ugly scones. OIn fact if you do the ugly scones I'll do the "Bog standard coffee" to go with it. No lattes or shots of anything at Bog standard.

Elgoogreven · 06/06/2010 19:10

and

ugly scones and bog standard coffee?

was born.

(a hadrians wall initiative).

I'd rather have good cake structure than a mediocre cake giftwrapped in swirly icing flim-flam.

My issue with them is simple - they're beautiful but the cake under all the icing is generally a rather crap cake. It's like opening a beautifule parcel - to find it's just a pair of socks.

Crap cakes are wrong, good cakes are the necessary for the world to turn properly (for at least one week in the month).

LynetteScavo · 06/06/2010 19:49

Y#ABU. Every town should have a decent backers.

A cupcakes can brighten up your whole day, and they are only 500 calories each.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 06/06/2010 19:49

YADNBU!!

It's not the cakes that are the problem, it's the pink, frilly infantile behavior it inspires in grown women.

You can shove yer bunting up yer arse.

NanKid · 06/06/2010 19:50

They're cakes. They're for eating. That is all. YABU.

LynetteScavo · 06/06/2010 19:50

Mind yuo, the local backers do an amazing cranberry scone....beats a cupcake any day. But I think they buy them in

lucky1979 · 06/06/2010 19:51

See, I could take or leave the cake bit, but wuld happily eat the icing with a large spoon

UnattendedToaster · 06/06/2010 19:56

YABU - nothing wrong with cupcakes, they're gorgeous, especially when I haven't had to make them but I want to know why there's a (solely) cupcake shop in my town and one in the next town and probably quite a few not much further that I don't know about yet but I'd have to drive FOUR hours for a patisserie! Have your cupcakes if you want but I want a slice of gateau!

lidofabiro · 06/06/2010 19:56

YANBU. Cupcakes are a bit of a fad ATM. There have been people quietly making wonderful cakes for years.

emptyshell · 06/06/2010 20:00

They are a fad... I'd rather have a chunk of grossly unfashionable gateaux or chocolate cake (I'd even slum it with carrot cake) than some flim flam of icing and no substance.

Hell give me a Cadbury's Caramel or Mars Bar muffin the girls I worked with used to make - they're not pretty and icingified - but gawd the chocolate and yum count.

I just can't see the point of cupcakes and how they reduce grown women to squeals of 10 year old girl delight otherwise only seen when confronted with pretty shoes and handbags.

elliemental · 06/06/2010 20:06

Nevergoogle, I'm with you, sister!

what the fuck is wrong with good old fashioned fairy cakes and iced buns, which don't cost £2.50 each?

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 06/06/2010 20:13

elliemental but they haven't been featured in the Daily Mail or Sex in the Cunting City.

I genuinely believe that this sort of frilly "girly" behavior does more damage to the status of women in society that a thousand porn films.

If we act like little girls, we will (deservedly) be treated like them.

Elgoogreven · 06/06/2010 21:06

My Sunday afternoon hypo thread is becoming a habit isn't it.
I blame my morning bike ride.
But hey, i stand by everything i say.

Quit with the frilly stuff and make ugly cakes that taste good.

KurriKurri · 06/06/2010 21:20

God yes - ugly scones, and rock cakes are the business. I like a cake I can get a good grip on.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 06/06/2010 21:32

Well, there's a new cupcake cafe opened in our local town, and a vacant shop right next door! Think of all the subversive signs you could put in.

But YAB a tiny bit U. Why not just wear a t-shirt with similar slogan and stand outside the shop? A lot cheaper.

Elgoogreven · 06/06/2010 21:41

yes, good thinking reshape. buying a shop might be a tad excessive. i really should take more food with me on my bike rides. i get really grumpy.

cupcakes perhaps?
