to think that putting Yorkshire Puddings on your main plate with your meat is a completely heathen practise?

It goes against everything that Yorkshire Puddings are FOR. Yorkshire puddings are a starter. They are supposed to fill you up so you don't eat so much meat. Eating them all together ruins the flow of the meal. It is so much more difficult to get meat and veg and gravy and puds out all at the same time - the timings of all the elements work perfectly and harmoniously when Yorkshires are served first. The joint sits resting and being eyeballed by hungry diners, the puds come straight to table from the hottest oven (not sharing a medium oven with the meat) The vegetables go on as you sit for the puds. Trying to serve up main course as everyone else sits for melon or some inferior starters that does not match the main meal is rubbish.

Why oh why does everyone insist on having them on the same plate? There's barely room! Puds are HUGE if you make them right. A shallow bowl with a huge pud and very good gravy - heaven. Follow with meat and veg. It is civilised. Don't get me started on carveries

Best Sunday dinners EVER.

Plate sized Yorkshire with lots of gravy and some golden syrup.

Same plate then for meat and veg.

Apple pie and custard for pudding.

There can be no other discussion, this is how it should be. (I'm about 5 millionth generation Yorkshire)

MannyMoeAndJack · 06/06/2010 16:50

Yorkshire raised here but Yorkshire pudding was always served as part of the main course, as it was at friends' houses too! Ony large hotels served them up as a starter course IIRC.

MannyMoeAndJack · 06/06/2010 16:51

mind you my mum would often save some Yorkshire pudding for dessert so she could eat it with ginger jam

bronze · 06/06/2010 17:22

Just asked Sil and she had never heard of this (shes from Yorkshire obviously)

MrsC2010 · 06/06/2010 17:24

Hmmm, yorkshires. Good with any roast!

lostinwales · 06/06/2010 17:32

Mmmm, I had some left over batter so I put it in a small loaf tin and we had it sliced like bread with golden syrup and vanilla ice cream for pudding, I'm actually salivating at the memory!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 06/06/2010 17:33

ah, is she from sheffield or other city / big town, though?

If she's from a rural (farming) area I'll be more surprised that she doesn't know about the traditional way to eat yorkshire pud!

lal123 · 06/06/2010 17:39

Yorkies WITH dinner every time.

On the subject of steamed suet puddings this has to be the worlds best. My Gran used to make it but never gave us the recipe before she died - Delias is the only one I've been able to find. Gran must have left in sitting in the bowl for a while because hers always had a lovely gooey top. Think I might make one..

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2010 17:45

I have Yorkshires with my meat and I ain't stopping for no-one so bog off! {grin] And listen to this, I HATE GRAVY so have mine without. Go on, have a fit everyone.

NanKid · 06/06/2010 17:48

YABU. Yorkies as a starter? Wrong!

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 06/06/2010 17:49

I think i prefer them before like today at mil we had 7 little ones each then loaded up after with veg and meat - at home dh likes it when i make dinner plate sized ones then put all the meat and veg inside it - it saves the food falling of the piled high plate . Frozen yps are evil cardboard.

lal123 · 06/06/2010 17:53

7 each??? but

ShowOfHands · 06/06/2010 17:56

Oh unclench. Can't you go and stride purposefully across a moor or something? Let it all out.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 06/06/2010 18:09

aww they are not massive (hers dont rise as well as mine ). I am waiting for the rain to stop so i can run em all off!

AvadaKedavra · 06/06/2010 18:44

This is the kind of suet pudding I meant, not a sweet dessert one

AvadaKedavra · 06/06/2010 18:45

bronze · 06/06/2010 18:52
