gerontius - It's pretty daft, when you consider some not too old person may (a) not drive and (b) not have a passport, yet be asked for ID.
OK, I've got distinguished grey hair and don't get asked, but if I was, I'd have no ID o show. Cannot even open a new bank account without a damn passport (77.50 now).
OK, it may seem unusual not to be a driver, but public transport has got me to most places for the last 50 years, without many problems.
Indeed, now there are timetables available via the internet, it is even easier to check for the best deals on travel in and around localities worldwide. Have used public transport in Russia, Canada, USA, Singapore and a few other places in Europe without any problems...
When petrol is 100 quid a litre, there might be a few more using public transport
