In being worried about baby plus prenatal education system?

This latest gimmick from America (where else) plays your baby sounds like a mums heartbeat. Whilst they are still in the womb. Nothing wrong with that, what worries me is that the heartbeats get faster so your baby is hearing a sound like the mum is stressed/upset etc. Surely that can't be good for them? Research shows that fetuses prefer music with a slow beat. Also, the website is full of dubious claims, no real research and stuff that is plain wrong. American pregnant mums seem to have fallen for the whole thing and post positive reviews based on no evidence whatsoever. What do British mums think? Am I just an old fuddy duddy?! Or do unborn babies and guillable mums to be need warning about this c**p?!

Do you have a link?

prenatal education? sounds like a money-making load of toot to me...

And surely the foetus will already be hearing the mother's heartbeat?

bexsmum · 03/06/2010 20:47

Didn't want to advertise the wretched thing, but if you google baby plus prenatal education you'll find it easily

That's what I was thinking, Rhinestone - heartbeat free as part of the deal, surely?

As for the rest, well - fool and her money, and all that...

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/06/2010 20:52

Yes, dishonest rather than dangerous I thought... Think there was a studr recently that showed the whole 'Mozart Effect' was nonsense too.

diamondsandtiaras · 03/06/2010 21:25

can't quite see how hearing 2 heartbeats is more beneficial to the baby than just 1 tbh.........it's like twins in reverse I can't believe women would fall for such crap!

nickysolar · 03/06/2010 21:54

In these modern times it has been proven time and time again - No more shaved pubic areas, enemas, and the recognition of the immense benefits of skin to skin after birth - all have in common the wonderful & clever mother nature that for the majority, works just fine thank you very much! Why are mums paying so much money for a piece of plastic that may at best.....um can't think of anything, and worst potentially cause unknown and unquantifiable harm to a mothers most precious creation?

have just been reading the reviews on Amazon; the credulity of parents is amazing

"lovely baby" (you would think that), "latched on within the first few hours" (they're designed to do that), "head control at two months" (learnt from a machine, that's clever), "not only do I think my baby is clever/lovely/wonderful but real health professionals tell me so" (Yeah, so how often does the HV burst out with: that's an incredibly ugly baby you've got there and clearly thick as two planks"?).

I used to put big headphones on my bump playing classical music to PFB DD1. I must admit she is very bright and musically talented.

DS1 and DS2 didnt get much of the same treatment as I was too busy playing mum. They are not as academic as DD but thats just the way the cookie crumbles.

DS2 was more likely to react to the Big Brother music in the weeks after his birth than Mozart

slouchingtowardswaitrose · 03/06/2010 22:37

Um, babies hear the mother's real heartbeat all the time.

This cannot be good.

Overstimulation.

Fucked up motives of parents and snake oil salesmen alike.

Disgusting IMO.

nickysolar · 04/06/2010 02:46

Its a sad fact that there are many companies out there only too wiling to cash in on a mothers natural desire to only want the best for her child....Exploitation of women at their most vulnerable, despicable.

nickysolar · 04/06/2010 02:57

Just been reading the FAQ and "safety", in terms on in the noise level it produces, they list lots of noisy things known to man and woman - street digger, airplane etc. Then this product appears in a different colour box with categories either side that are a gentle breeze and conversation. THEN! get this: several lines down in another shaded box to draw attention, is the louder sound of the normal noise inside the mothers womb, adjacent categories? - motorbikes, lawn mower, chain saw.
Selling tactics or what?!!

TheBride · 04/06/2010 03:05

Just the phrase "prenatal education" makes me shudder.

By the laws of genetics, children whose parents buy this will be dumb because only a really stupid person would believe this stuff.

EricNorthmansmistress · 04/06/2010 08:09

First children do better academically than subsequent children - it's because you have more time after they are born, not because of classical music/heartbeats heard before they are born.

Rollmops · 04/06/2010 08:39

Eeerr.... the fetus is in the womb, yes? Therefore can hear mothers heartbeat. What's the point of this nonsense?
