To want to cry that the fridge/freezer has been off all day...

and my dh (who has been home all day, while I have been at work) didn't bloody well notice?

We went shopping yesterday, bought a huge load, and the dial inside the fridge must has got knocked down to zero. It's all warm. I opened the freezer and everything was melting, then opened the fridge and touched a couple of things, they were warm. Took me a couple of seconds to notice and switch it back on, but the damage is done and I want to cry.

Why couldn't he have bloody noticed? God, I love him and he does his fair share of housework but it has to be the same thing every time (like the laundry, or cleaning the loo in the same way) and he just doesn't NOTICE things like cobwebs where he is not looking, or about 200 quid's worth of food going to waste.

Gah. I am also pregnant, which is not helping me greet this rationally or in a particularly zen-like fashion. I want to sit down and watch the telly, not spend the rest of the night cooking fucking mince. He is now at work.

Poor you! That would suck. Awful lot of waste and money down the drain. Suppose it is not really DP's fault though so don't hate him too much! Just have a good ol cry and you'll feel better! (I am not being patronising btw, I'm also pregnant and love a good ol cry now!)

Isnt it ok for 24hrs if the doors shut or summat ??

You are probably insured on your household insurance for freezer breakdowns.

Oh that horrible sinking feeling when you realise!

You can cook any raw meat that you've had frozen that's defrosted and then refreeze it again if that helps limit your money loss.

I did this after my freezer was left open overnight. I spoke to Environmental Health Officers and they said that it would be safe, but the quality would be slightly impaired by the second freezing. Tasted alright to me!

Thank you, am now slightly less weepy...will cook the meat and refreeze...and take my chance with the rest. Unless half-thawed peas are dangerous? (That's a serious question!)

I think my real frustration is about dh's capacity not to notice these things. It's not something I can really put my finger on or talk to him about - after all, it's not deliberate! - but I just feel like things like l my responsibility by default and I don't want them to be. Oh, I'm not expressing myself very well am I? I probably abu (too controlling?) but I think I will wallow a bit more and then try not to shout when he comes home. He's going to get a bloody shock when I go back to work after mat leave and he has a little person to look after!

I thought we all felt like that. The blokes don't notice stuff and you feel you are the one to keep the show on the road, even if they do pull a rabbit out of a hat every now and then. Mine just painted the side of the house. If I'd had the time I would have spent it cleaning the inside but it does look bloody good.
