To be irritated by the For Sale boards springing up everywhere?

Only they aren't "For Sale" boards, they are sponsoring school summer fairs.....

I know that schools raise funds through them, but they are everywhere now.

I came out of my house and thought everyone knew something we didn't about our road and were trying to move, then I realised what they were. When I 'm driving, I think someone is on the move, then realise not!

It's annoying and distracting.

Is this just a London thing?

So AIBU??!

YANBU

We are looking for a place to buy at the moment and find these board really misleading! I get my hopes all up that there is a new place for sale and then realise it's just St Trinian's School Fete...

(we are in London so can't tell you if it's just a London thing).

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 02/06/2010 15:29

YANBU - sounds very distracting, especially to drivers.

I've not seen any around here - South Wales.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 15:30

minipie I hadn't even thought of it from that aspect!

You must go

That's a nice house for sale. Just a summer fair.
That's a nice house for sale. Just a summer fair
That's a nice house for sale. Just a summer fair
That's a nice house for sale. Just a summer fair

ad infinitum

What a pain

YANBU - 'for sale' boards are ugly enough, without adding more of a similar ilk into the melee.

I have just started noticing them too.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 15:32

We have 8 in a small road - two are genuine, the rest are not. They will be there for two months approx.

I've not seen sponsor ones but there's a great set along a road a few miles form me that are having an argument.

They start with 'Say NO to the marina, protect our area from development!'

Then graduate to 'Say YES to Jacobean moorings. It's NOT a marina!'

Cue -Oh yes it is! - Oh no it's not!- boards for about half a mile.

More people should argue on billboards

ImSoNotTelling · 02/06/2010 15:36

I hate them

Loads around here

I also think "ooooh that's for sale..... oh no it isn't it's a car boot sale" etc etc

i think there is some rule about advertising and estate agents boards and this is some kind of loophole they're working isn't it

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 15:41

I wonder how much each board earns the school?

OP posts:
ImSoNotTelling · 02/06/2010 15:44

I imagine they just get the free advertising don't they, and the estate agent gets the free advertising too.

Fab deal all round

DastardlyandSmugly · 02/06/2010 15:46

Lots round me too but I don't mind them as I like a summer fair. I'm in London as well.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 15:47

I think the school does earn something, I remember a PTA letter asking for homes for the boards in the run up to a fair, and there was an amount went to the school.

But they are like elevated litter.

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 16:05

anyone got these outside of London?

OP posts:
FranSanDisco · 02/06/2010 16:11

The estate agents do pay an amount per board but can't remember how much.

usualsuspect · 02/06/2010 16:16

I've never seen one .. I'm not in London tho

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 16:24

Am I right to think then that this is a London phenemom
phenunim phenononm fenuminum feenummynum thing?

OP posts:
PrivetDancer · 02/06/2010 16:34

yes we have them round here (Bucks)

What's annoying me more is that one estate agent has made their sale boards into St George flags with 'come on england' written on them.

mintyfresh · 02/06/2010 17:15

Seen them in Bristol - I agree is very annoying way to advertise a school fayre primarily for the benefit of estate agents!

Maybe you should knock on the door of the houses and ask to have a look around

PrivetDancer · 02/06/2010 17:26

or drop a bag of jumble off for the fayre

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 18:04

am liking the jumble idea!

OP posts:
onebadbaby · 02/06/2010 18:13

We don't have them here in the north!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/06/2010 18:18

spect you will soon - then you'll know my angst

OP posts:
Runoutofideas · 02/06/2010 19:14

Eek - I've just agreed to have one for our summer fair (Bristol). Didn't realise they were so controversial!

CaptainUnderpants · 02/06/2010 19:31

I think it is about £20 a board - may look awful but a really good and easy way to raise much needed funds for schools.

I have one outside my house at moment.

ShellingPeas · 02/06/2010 20:14

We have them in Sussex too. They sponsor everything from school fetes to point to point races and agricultural fairs.

oldandgreynow · 02/06/2010 20:33

Never seen one!
