To pick up the dog mess from in front of my house and...

...deposit it in the gutter in front of my neighbour's house. Since I suspect they were responsible for it (via their dog obviously) Calm down, it's not really another dog thread. For the last 2 weeks or so I've found dog mess in the gutter immediately in front of my house. I know it's not from my dog because I am scrupulous about cleaning up after him and taking it down to the dog bin. I know it's not the house next door because they have a big dog and that doesn't match up with the size of the offending ordure. It wouldn't be a passing dog because we live in a small cul-de-sac so people don't pass through.

That leaves the neighbours a few doors down who've got the exact same model of dog as ours. It looks just like my own dog's doo re size. These neighbours have a history of being unfriendly and unsociable. Anyway, for the past couple of weeks I've been picking it up and disposing of it with mine because I can't face leaving it there and I don't want people to accuse me. This morning, coming back from work at 6am there was a fresh pile and I'd just had enough so i scraped it up on some cardboard walked down the street and dumped it. So, AIBU? Paranoid? Incredibly petty? Or justified.

"Same model of dog as ours"

belgo · 02/06/2010 12:40

Are you sure it's definitely from a dog? Do they walk the dog so early in the morning?

My parents had this problem; then discovered it was from a fox.

Pootles2010 · 02/06/2010 12:41

Erm might someone on your street have someone visiting them who has a dog? And wouldn't it be slightly more adult to actually speak to them about it, rather than just do as you have done?

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 12:41

Hmmm..never seen a fox round here in ten years. What does fox shit look like?

OP posts:
belgo · 02/06/2010 12:42

there are more urban foxes now then there used to be.

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 12:43

Agree Pootles except that they are not the type you have adult conversations with - the mum has blanked me for the whole 10 years we've lived here. The dad is a notorious local alky and 7 feet tall.

coastal urban foxes?

OP posts:
belgo · 02/06/2010 12:46

if they are the type of people to let their dog do this regularly outside your house, then I agree, they are probably not the type of people to listen if you talk to them about it.

Unless it's a fox

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 12:48

If it is a fox belgo then I'd be honoured to clear up after it - but it sure smell like dog poo to me!

OP posts:
Pootles2010 · 02/06/2010 13:12

If they're not the type you would want to talk to, i really wouldn't be putting dog shit in front of their house. I agree its not nice, but you're going to cause yourself more trouble.

louii · 02/06/2010 13:17

I think you spend too much time examining dog poo!
Unreasonable unless you catch them at it.

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 13:20

Actually I was starting to plan a 'stake-out' to catch whoever at it and then I thought - am I losing it? So I thought I would check here first

OP posts:
StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 02/06/2010 14:04

I'd go for the stakeout, myself. Or rig up a webcam. Then, when you have the evidence, put it right on their doorstep!

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 14:36

...hammer..hammer...drill...drill (just working on my Trojan Paving Slab - that'll sort them out!)

This has happened in our area recently with the 'accused' family having dog poo left on their front door step for them to step into as soon as they opened the door. And it turned out to be foxes in the end. So be careful!!

Dizzydollybird · 02/06/2010 14:42

Let your dog take a look at it, if he/she tries to roll around in it, it could well be fox poo!

Personally, I would go with a*rsehat neighbours and be wary of a fight

Vallhala · 02/06/2010 14:47

FYI fox poo is smallish and tarry-looking, very dark to black.

How do I know?

Every fecking dog I've owned or fostered has delighted in rolling in the stuff, that's how.

Vallhala · 02/06/2010 14:48

Please do not click if you're eating a late lunch/early tea.

fox poo

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 14:49

Dog has inspected it on several occasions but shown no particular interest - and it's not like him to pass up the chance to roll in someone else's poo!

You're right Dizzy, I wouldn't want to get in a fight although I can stand up for myself but I was working on the assumption that anyone sneaky enough to wait until I'm not around before encouraging their dog to shit (nearly) on my doorstep isn't going to 'out' themselves by starting a row about it. Interestingly I have just been up the shop and the poo has been removed...wonder what that means?

eyebeam · 02/06/2010 14:51

Most interesting Vallhala - too dark to be the culprit (unless it's living on KFC?)

grumpypants · 02/06/2010 14:53

Wait up for them, take a photo from yr window. Open the door, say v sweetly, unless you find somewhere else for this i shall be sending this to the council. Dog fine anyone?

dignified · 02/06/2010 15:09

I wouldnt dump poo outside someones house unless your positive its theirs. Someone regularly left poo on my doorstep , i was furious. I actually caught the person doing it and she yelled that she was sick of picking up my dogshit.

I pointed out my dog had died over a month ago , which she had. Why not just ask ?

belgo · 02/06/2010 16:48

Because foxes are now eating more human food waste, their poo might be different to woodland foxes.

Right I've done enough thinking about poo today.

But agree with the others, don't leave the poo outside their door!

MeMudmagnet · 02/06/2010 16:55

I'd ring your local council.

I had a problem like this a couple of years ago, drove me nuts.
Someone was letting their dog dump right outside our house on the pavement. If me or the kids didn't step in it, then the postman etc would, then it would get walked up our path.

I spoke to the neighbours to see if they knew who it might be, we all did a stakeout between us, but never caught them.

The council have their own dog poo lady who said she'd put some fine notices up. If that didn't work she'd park up and try to catch the person.
Unbelievably the signs alone worked!

I always pick up after my dog, as do most people I know. These people are few and far between, so if they're regularly leaving it in the same place they should be easy to catch

lazarusb · 02/06/2010 20:22

When I was young, a woman used to let her dog poo on our front lawn every evening (and leave it there). My dad asked her politely to remove it the first few times- we lived next to a field where it could have spent time with the poo of all the wildlife there- then he got increasingly annoyed and threatened to put it back through her letterbox. Which he did. She didn't do it again!
