to report an untaxed car?

hatesponge · 01/06/2010 22:18

Would you report an untaxed car (being driven about, not off-road) whatever the circumstances?

My Ex's road tax ran out a month ago. Our DC have pointed it out to him since then and his response was that he hadn't got round to it

He has done so much awful stuff to me over the years that I am sorely tempted to report him. However, part of me thinks I shouldn't....bad karma & all that.

Am sure IANBU simply to consider it, but AIBU to do it?

see, now i need to know what got deleted!!

on a serious note, the insuarnce issue is crucial. he might not have insurance, or an MOT as you cannot get taxed without it..could be dangerous and costly for other road users

and it's not like it's hard to get a car taxed, you can do it online in minutes.

i would think he has not got MOT or insurance either and would certainly report him to protect your children and other road users

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 01/06/2010 22:39

is yamashita Gichin again?

mumbar · 01/06/2010 22:43

lol LVV!!! Love the correct use of the c word.

I was on the fence on this one and have just dried the tears from tryharders post and now say yes do it.

and agree do not let dcs in the car until he has.

ant3nna · 01/06/2010 22:44

Report. I reported one which was dumped outside my house and the DVLA came the next day to put gigantic stickers and a clamp on it. Made my day.

Its all anonymous so its not like he will even know that its you.

What if he doesn't get round to insuring it? What if his insurance has a clause that means it must be taxed for the insurance to be valid?

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 22:46

the C&P m.o would suggest it is gichin. MNHQ hshould be able to confirm if you report.

snice · 01/06/2010 22:46

insurance isn't valid if car is untaxed

cornsilkcottagecheese · 01/06/2010 22:46

whi is gichin?

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 01/06/2010 22:48

Er, may have misspelled. Started a thread about tattoos, C&P'd in the same style as yamashita.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/06/2010 22:48

Even if you've paid for insurance, without tax it's invalid. I would report it.

I'm a big meanie though and I'd report even someone I liked if they did this - it does put up the costs for the rest of us.

Is he doing anything else you can get him for while you are on the job? Benefit fraud? Embezzlement? Sex with domestic animals?

ClaireDeLoon · 01/06/2010 22:49

Yes, I would also like to know who is gichin?

KillerCleavage · 01/06/2010 22:51

Absolutely report it.

I was at the bus stop the other month and watched a 'Vehicle Licensing Compliance Unit' video van drive up and down every street. Guess it was using that ANPR thingy to check every vehicle parked up. And I live in a - whispers - fairly middle class area. They don't mess about.

But yes, the big issue is that no road tax means no insurance. He shouldn't be on the road and most certainly shouldn't have your DC in the car.

bubbles4 · 01/06/2010 22:52

this is Gichin

hatesponge · 01/06/2010 22:53

Just to say, prammy mammy for your experience. I would feel awful if Ex blamed someone else for reporting him.

As to what he would do if he thought it was me, I don't know to be honest, but I doubt it can be worse than anything that's already happened. When we were together I went through years of EA and some physical abuse (though that was, if you can use such a term, fairly minor). He's run up huge debts on our joint account and harassed/beaten up male friends of mine (after we split). Which when written down makes me feel even less like I shouldn't report him.

WMMC, am liking the idea of other offences ;) sadly - or perhaps luckily- there are no family pets. He is involved in some sort of tax dodge in relation to his business but sadly that's all above board and sanctioned by his accountant.

see, I think it's clear in the OP that the motivation for doing this is vindictive. Can't see what was deleted though so don't know how much of a personal attack it was.

LordVolAuVent · 01/06/2010 22:56

Definitely a cunt then, imho. Deserves reporting, but don't risk your safety over it. Or someone else's. Will probably be caught anyway, as he doesn't seem to be in too much of a hurry to sort it out.

Didn't gichin start a thread about smoking when pregnant as well?

whomovedmychocolate · 01/06/2010 22:59

hatesponge - the funny thing is though, if the revenue even get wind of tax avoidance, they do tend to audit quite closely and often find issues. Funny that

EightiesChick · 01/06/2010 22:59

Report him! You can do it anonymously. Follow this link and then click on 'report an untaxed vehicle online'. Job done! I have used this myself.

If his car's untaxed it's also likely to have no MOT as he would need this for tax, and the same goes for insurance - plus even if he has it it's invalid without tax. Cowardly irresponsible drivers really annoy me. He sounds like exactly the type who ought to have to face up to his own bad behaviour. If he ever suspected it was you, you can truthfully point out that the DVLA have all-powerful computer systems these days and do spot checks too.

EightiesChick · 01/06/2010 23:02

I would do this to any car I saw untaxed, and wouldn't ever feel bad about it. It is dangerous, to yourself and others, to drive without tax, insurance etc. I can't be the only person who holds this view - maybe someone else has walked past his car today and is thinking of it too.

llbeanj · 01/06/2010 23:10

oh, FFS, no tax does not mean insurance is not valid. where do you get this crap from?

he might very well guess it was you being nasty, do you want to have to deal with that? if that's not a problem, or you can lie about it convincingly, then go for it.

myredquattro · 01/06/2010 23:12

Well my insurance def is not valid without tax. It says so very clearly.

KillerCleavage · 01/06/2010 23:16

For your car insurance to be valid you must have up to date road tax and an up to date MOT certifcate. Either one being expired invalidates your car insurance.

chippy47 · 01/06/2010 23:17

llbeanj -your insurance is null and void if the car is not taxed. Do some research and you will see where we get this crap from.

EightiesChick · 01/06/2010 23:18

llbeanj just looking, actually you have a point as I can see it's a bit of a grey area. For many people though it will be true, as myredquattro has said above. Plus as it definitely works the other way round - ie you can't get tax without current insurance - many people who leave their cars untaxed also don't have insurance. This isn't fair or acceptable.

Talking about 'nasty', how nasty would you say it was to not care that you could damage or write off someone's car in an accident, or injure passengers in that car, and those people would have to pay their own costs because you weren't properly covered and couldn't? I'd call that pretty nasty.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/06/2010 23:19

llbeanj - If you tried to claim on an insurance policy you would indeed find this was the case. If you read the terms of your policy it will have a clause relating to the vehicle being used in a crime - well it will - driving on the road without tax is an offence.

llbeanj · 01/06/2010 23:25

go on - where did you get it from, I would be interested to know. because it's not it any laws I have ever looked at.
