To want to give the dog a crew cut?

I have a 3 year old coker spaniel.
He is gorgeous and we all love him to bits. But omg his hair!

Would it be very cruel of me to give him a number one all over?

Verry cruel, he's gorgeous! get brushing, i brushed 2 huge handfuls of hair out of my 'hairy' dog yesterday. Altho quite common to give spaniels a 'trim' i think, but NOT a crew cut

YANBU. Though I find it helps not to have carpet. Get laminate/wood instead. Much easier to sweep hair away. Then it only needs doing once. If you go for the shaving option, you would need to keep repeating the process.

HTH

I have the hairest goldie alive, good lord the dog has enough fur to carpet a small city.
So every summer I have clipped to be like a "lab" rather than the retriever he is-he seems cooler for it in the hot weather. the rest of the year I hoover him daily and brush every day too, if ive got my marigolds on then I give him a going over with them too.

Gigantaur · 01/06/2010 15:32

It's ok, i wont really. but the thought is tempting.

Even with daily brushing (you have to or else he gets dreafully matted) there is still a carpet of hair covering the entire house.
I have wooden floors downstairs an i can literally fill and entire carrier bag full of hair each day from what i sweeo up.

We do trim him in the summer usually but we are still waiting for summer to arrive

I have a springer and every 3 months he goes to the hairdressers and gets it all shaved off (to a number one). He is a very active dog and the curls and mess just get in the way when he's bouncing through mud.

Best £28 I spend.

Book in for a clip and get a Furminator. It's a metal brush that strips out the loose fur and fluffs and really cuts down on the amount of random dog hair floating around.

yabu. but you know that and I only posted really to say that he is completely gorgeous. cockers (and even cokers) are phenomenal dogs. I love 'em to bits.had one when a youngster but lost the lab-cocker argument with dh and dds.

JenniferCanesten · 01/06/2010 20:21

YANBU. He's been wanting to give you a mullet for ages.

bobdog · 01/06/2010 20:24

NO, you could knit another dog with what I sweep up. I trimmed the dogs trousers and ears a couple of weeks ago and although quite wonky and uneven, we think she looks younger

But note to self - never take up hair dressing

chegirlmonkeybutt · 01/06/2010 20:26

YANBU.

I have always clipped my dogs short. I have mongrels though.

I usually do it myself but I recently took my Chi x pom to a doggie hairdressers to get it done.

IMO the dogs love it and get all frisky when they are clipped. Gives them a new lease of life in the summer.

Little Atticus looks well cute now. Its impossible to get down the street because old ladies and small children wont leave him alone

Tell me about it....I often threaten to put mine in a plastic bag with just his head and feet poking out (it is a JOKE!) .... I could make another dog with the amount of hair he leaves behind...it blows like tumble weed across the backroom floor...

DH clips our king Charles spaniel to a no 3 all over every month or so, she looks cute and stops her coming back from walks filthy. It's those spaniel ears - they get covered in food.
