My DH took it upon himself to black binbag my DS age 5 teddies as he thinks they are only for girls!! DS and I managed to retrieve them and am now finding every night DH makes some comment or other about how DS is too old for said teddies when bedtime arrives. May sound like a trivial matter but becoming more and more heated as each evening passes. Having explained that his concerns belong in the era of the dinosaur, and that our DS takes comfort in said teddies and sleeps all night long what is his problem?? Am now being v rude to him re this matter. Anyone else encountered this? Would love some advice to shut him up once and for all on this matter. Ta xx

DH feels that they are dust collectors, hmm. My, this is sounding worse the more I think about it. I loved all of my teddies and still have my special ones. My two DSs will be the same should they choose, not budging on this one. Thank for the support

My Ds age 9 - who plays rugby, judo and football, often cuddles up to one of my old teddy bears .

I still have my favorite cuddly toys - a black cat , although it sits on my bedroom shelf and is over 40 yrs old, it is an important part of my life.

My DH ( ex Royal Marine & now Police ) still has his old teddies , sitting next to my old cat on the bedroom shelf .

Get your Dh on this thread NOW - he will be ripped apart and beaten to death with the soggy ends !

NoahAndTheWhale · 31/05/2010 21:34

DS is 6.5 and has loads of teddies.

Your DH is being horrible.

Cretaceous · 31/05/2010 21:34

Was he bullied at school for having a teddy and is concerned his son might be picked on? Can't believe he'd be so horrid without a good reason.

PS They are dust collectors, though .

MissTrumpton · 31/05/2010 21:36

It doesn't sound like a trivial matter at all. It sounds like your DH is bullying and ridiculing a little boy for doing normal little boy things. My 6yo ds would be heartbroken if he was told he couldn't sleep with his hundreds of animals anymore. Is he mean to his son in other ways too?

teaandcakeplease · 31/05/2010 21:37

If he's worried about dust, couldn't they just be sponge washed periodically, or machine washed on a gentle cycle?

FakePlasticTrees · 31/05/2010 21:39

they are dust collectors, but can normally be thrown in the washing machine...

FFS - my DH would have to come up with some fantastic story about nearly being crushed to death as a small boy by a falling giant teddy bear or something to get me to forgive throwing away DS's teddies.

And he must have known this was a wrong thing to do or he wouldn't have done this without discussing this with you first.

Get him on this thread, I'd like to give him a few choice words...

mummy2theboys · 31/05/2010 21:42

No, DH not mean in other ways. He just seems to have this teddy fixation. MIL passed away so not able to find out if any deep rooted childhood teddy angst. Yes, how easy is it too wash a teddy?

ask your DH if he would like someone to take away his toys as a child just because they thought they werent appropriate.
remind him that stuff like this is why we have therapy as adults
ask him if he'd prefer a little boy with no imagination and no emotional attachments.
and then hit him over the head with a teddy from me.

misdee · 31/05/2010 21:45

dh has a bear still.

dont tell him i told you

borderslass · 31/05/2010 21:46

my ds is 16 in july and still has 2 of teddies that live on his bed and go on holiday with him.

Cretaceous · 31/05/2010 21:49

I think it's a bit strong to say emotional abuse if the DH is kind in other ways, besides this teddy fixation. After all, I have a Bratz fixation - luckily my DD has never craved one of those harlots .

PS I still have Big Ted - and about 10 others...

trixie123 · 31/05/2010 22:03

when we take our pupils away for a week at the end of Y7 when they are 12, they are encouraged to take a teddy and most of them do. Your DH is being ridiculous - show him this thread.

pissovski · 31/05/2010 22:05

strange twunty man

i know a 30 yr old male who has a teddy in his car (just because). He is one of the nicest guys i know too(completely unscientific correlation!!)

beanlet · 31/05/2010 22:06

My DH, aged 51, still has his handsome old teddy bear. He sits in pride of place on a chair in our bedroom. Teddy bears should NEVER be given up!

2rebecca · 31/05/2010 22:08

What is his problem? Seriously, why is he so anti-teddies for little boys?
Did his own parents chuck his out or something?
They are harmless, the lad is 5 not 15.
This isn't a battle worth fighting. Tell him to stop being so controlling, this is the sort of thing his son could resent him forever for.

logi · 31/05/2010 22:09

Agree with Trafficcone ...emotional abuse...feel sad for your little boy.

Buddleja · 31/05/2010 22:15

If he isn't mean in any other way then there has to be something that deeply bothers him about his boy behaving like a girl - have you asked him?

To put the record straight there I'm NOT saying that I think a boy having a teddy makes him behave like a girl - this is what the OP's DH think!!

I've just asked my DH what he thinks about DS1 having a beloved teddy (after reading out the OP) he wants to know what the OP's DH wants to deny his son this enjoyment

15 is too old to go to bed with teddies. 5 is normal.

nickschick · 31/05/2010 23:19

He is a nob of the highest order

My dh all 18 stone 6'2 ex para of him has a bear ..........all 3 of our ds have bears ds1 is 16 and still has simba sat on his pillow ....ds2 has hamish and ds3 has about a million pandas in fact dh quite often buys ds3 a panda and ds3 is 9!!!

I think boys need bears.

BritFish · 31/05/2010 23:31

boys need bears, you're right nickchick!

Tinuviel · 01/06/2010 00:13

DS1 is 12 and DS2 is 9. Changing their beds takes them ages because of all the teddies etc that they have to take off and then put back on again. Your DH is being an idiot. DS2 has my old teddy bear in there too and his very first bear (referred to as 'toxic bear' by everyone else) which is manky in the extreme!! Still wouldn't throw it out though.

I thought having bears was fairly normal for most people. Maybe it's just me!!
