to think Asda's Price Guarantee is a huge CON

I'm sure a few of you must have seen the adverts where you can get your money back on your shop if it cost less at other supermarkets.

What it doesn't tell you is that -

1/ You can only claim online
2/ You have to wait 48 hours before you can make your claim online
3/ You have to have bought a minimum of 8 items
4/ If you were to buy 100 tubes of Pringles (other snack products are available ) this counts as 1 item - bet this rule wouldn't apply if you went through th 15 items of fewer till!
5/ It only compares with Tesco, Morrisons or Sainsbury's - so for example, Iceland's 4pts of milk for £1.10 doesn't get a look in
6/ The comparison is on the whole shopping basket not per single item

Do they think we are stupid - just lower the price of all relevant items to begin with and stop wasting time and money on ridiculous gimmicks.

Deep breath in and relax!

isnt that what advertising is all about??
Ohhh it looks good, but in reality, its crap?
Who can be arsed to come home from shopping and go through a big shop online price matching everything? Not me for sure!

bumpybecky · 30/05/2010 00:30

I've used it twice for online shops and it's just a matter of logging into the site (so user name and password) then it works it out for you

I didn't know it was the total shopping basket though rather than individual items.

It's been cheaper both times than Tesco, Morrisons or Sainsburys less than £2 each time for shops of approx £90

hoppershopper · 30/05/2010 00:37

Ah i see! Do you just the barcode numbers in then? Thats pretty easy, but still couldnt e bothered! It would cost me the difference in petrol getting back down there to claim it!

Silver1 · 30/05/2010 01:21

Of course it's a con, they need you to shop with them, at a profitable margin so that they can make money. How they wiggle their iggle to achieve the profit is down to them, and you shopping with them is ultimately up to you. Go to my supermarket do a your shop on line and see which supermarket comes out cheapest for your trolley then shop there.

bumpybecky · 31/05/2010 13:15

I do my Asda shopping totally online, all you do is log in (username and password) then it tells you the total difference between supermarkets. There's no barcodes involved just gives a total price difference, so it says something like Tesco +£1.46, Sainsburys + £3.23, Morrisons +£2.60

Apparently if Asda were more expensive they issue a e-voucher to use on my next online shop.

I think the Asda price guarantee uses the mysupermarket comparison site behind the asda branded frontpage.

3littlefrogs · 31/05/2010 13:17

What really irritates me is the fact that at least 50% of the cost of products is the advertising. I really don't need to see all this advertising TBH - I can do my shopping perfectly well without.

bumpybecky · 31/05/2010 14:11

advertising and the extra layers of pointless packaging

flaime · 31/05/2010 19:39

I did this and got money back as Tesco's was cheaper then ASDA.

Not bad considering I only usually shop at Morrisons as our nearest Tesco's is a 30 mile round trip .

Linnet · 31/05/2010 19:46

The checkout operator gave me a leaflet about this when it first started. I waited until the next day and sat down to find out how much I could have saved only to find that it wouldn't work so I gave up and I haven't bothered to try again since.

nagoo · 31/05/2010 19:51

The Tesco advert thing is more of a big con IMO, since they only compare 'baskets' of shopping that have been done in Tesco. Now clearly if Tesco have got an offer on product A then I'm going to buy it where I wouldn't have probably bought it in ASDA where there was no promotion.

You have to have your special goggles on to spy all these tricks.

bibbitybobbityhat · 31/05/2010 19:53

Who can be arsed? Honestly?

LoveBeing34 · 31/05/2010 19:58

YABU cause it does tell you all that

lou031205 · 31/05/2010 20:36

Sainsburys 'price match' was on Watchdog last week, because a lot of their price matching actually increased their price, as it was cheaper than Tesco/Asda/Morrisons. So they advertised 'Tesco price match' tin of tomatoes for say, 40p, but they were 36p before the price match!!

BertieBotts · 31/05/2010 20:38

Exactly nagoo.

cat88 · 31/05/2010 21:16

Its not just the price guarantee that is a huge con...our asda has another trick.. the shelf clearly said the strawberries were rolled back to £1 although the punnets are covered in £1.50 stickers so when i got to the till - it scanned at £1.50. After kicking up a fuss they check it out and yes - i'm correct...and refund the difference. This happens again and again during the shop..each time i'm told its 'blips in their system ' or 'should come off at the end but does not always'... anyway said to DH when i got home if I had not queried them it would have added 10% on to our shopping bill - not all on strawberries

DaisymooSteiner · 31/05/2010 21:18

PMSL at Sainsbury's price match!
