No YANBU, it's up to you how much you want to spend, not for them to dictate to you what you should buy. And if they complain that you didn't get what they asked for, they're rude and ungrateful.

mrspooh · 29/05/2010 22:01

hi, i wouldnt have bought it. at that price, its a main present from the parents. just because she wants it, doesnt mean she gets it either!

echt · 29/05/2010 22:01

I'd say she hasn't been taught good manners. Buy what you want, and for the price you can afford.

If she queries it, and it sounds like she might, say you'd already bought your gift.

It totally depends on your relationship with them/her, how much money you have, etc - some people might spend that much, but that doesn't mean you should. I wouldn't spend that much on a niece or nephew though, I'd spend about £10. And I wouldn't take very kindly to a text instructing me what to get, but I suppose all families are different.

But anyway YANBU!

YANBU but perhaps suggest that you all have a £ top level for presents in the future

Fruitysunshine · 29/05/2010 22:02

Yanbu

thankyou everyone. the reason i feel guily is because i did not imagine the present would cost so much and i replied saying i would get it!! and now obviously i havent. but i was so when i realised how much it cost, they know that we are a on a low income and £30 is my weekly shopping budget

Just be honest- my SIL asked for a pair of roller boots for her dd last year which cost nearly £50. I said sorry, we can't afford but would be happy to give her £20 towards a pair. She took it well. I am not going to put my family budget in the red for anyone, I'm afraid.

YANBU. Is there a cheaper version?

OneFucker2Many · 29/05/2010 22:14

yes there was a cheaper version, but more of an accessory that was £15, so i got that. really hope she likes it and is not disappointed, as that is still a lot for us to spend. worth it if she likes it though

I don't blame you. My limit on kids stuff is about a tenner [tightwad]. I'm sure she'll love it.

OneFucker2Many · 29/05/2010 22:20
