to not tip the supermarket delivery man?

I had my first ever supermarket shop delivery yesterday. It was very thrilling (as you all know, trailing round the supermarket with a baby is not so much fun).

Part of me thought I ought to tip the driver, and the other part said 'yeah, but I'm broke and he's working, which I'm not, so...'

The 'no' side won. Of course.

Do you tip the supermarket delivery driver? If yes, how much? If not, how do you cope with the crashing guilt? ;)

I never tip them apart from Christmas time. Don't think it is compulsary.

differentID · 29/05/2010 19:05

Do not tip delivery drivers- they could lose their jobs if they accept "gifts".

pop1973 · 29/05/2010 19:05

No, I never have in the past tipped the delivery driver. Never even considered it.

autodidact · 29/05/2010 19:05

I do. A couple of quid. But I don't feel it's obligatory or feel guilty when I don't have any change in the house.

Gin4495 · 29/05/2010 19:06

I've never tipped the delivery driver. It's never occured to me.

JodieO · 29/05/2010 19:06

I don't. Afaik they're not allowed to accept them either.

LadyInMauve · 29/05/2010 19:07

I don't, and have never got the impression that they expect it.

You can always tell if people expect a tip - all that hanging around looking expectant. Americans are particularly good at it!

faerie07 · 29/05/2010 19:07

The only delivery driver I tip is our chinese food delivery guy, after awhile they get to know you and you get your food hot and fresh!!!

firsttimemum77 · 29/05/2010 19:07

No, never tipped a delivery driver and never thought to tbh. You pay up to £5.00 delivery charge as it is and the delivery driver is paid to deliver the shopping that you have paid for, so no, YANBU.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 29/05/2010 19:08

I don't, but have often wondered if I should -- they haul my delivery up to a second-floor flat and into the kitchen. But am worried it would be inappropriate .

differentID, is that true for sure? It's Tesco we use. I'm guessing they prob do have a policy against it.

LadyInMauve · 29/05/2010 19:09

Yes, would agree a tip should not be expected where there is delivery charge.

I always tip takeaway food delivery people, though, as no delivery charge so their wages are lower as a result.

lindsaygii · 29/05/2010 19:09

I also tip the Chinese delivery driver, for the same reason. Probably that's where I got the idea of tipping the supermarket one.

I'm glad to hear they aren't allowed to accept gratuities, makes me feel much better about not offering one!

Sainsbury driver told me that they're not allowed to accept tips...

I did tip the Ocado driver at Christmas - remember that snow? They got through eventually! I thought I was going to be like Margot in The Good Life (showing my age) and have to say that Christmas hadn't been delivered but they turned up with everything.

differentID · 29/05/2010 19:15

it's that same as people who work in a shop can't accept gifts either.

I know it's written into my contract (shopworker) that I must refuse gifts from customers, I would have thought anyone who works for national retailers have the same rule for all staff.

5inthebed · 29/05/2010 19:17

DH is a delivery driver and isn't allowed to accept tips.

Veteran · 29/05/2010 19:18

I don't tip them either, Tesco have a no tip policy anyway according to their drivers.

victoriascrumptious · 29/05/2010 19:18

I never tip supermarket delivery drivers. I do tip takeaway delivery drivers

muggglewump · 29/05/2010 19:21

I never tip.
I do offer them a drink of juice/water.

Are they allowed to take tips?

Years ago I worked for Tesco and we had a carry to car service and weren't allowed to accept tips.

Having money on you at all was a sackable offence.

TheNextMrsDepp · 29/05/2010 19:22

Well, OP, I think you have your answer!! Tipping not required!
And welcome to the world of online grocery shopping. My dcs haven't been near a supermarket in years, not since they managed to TIP OVER a trolley, with dd2 in the childseat (thankfully strapped in and left unscathed).

jellybeans · 29/05/2010 19:24

never occured to me.

capstone · 29/05/2010 19:41

I don't tip them.

beanlet · 29/05/2010 19:45

No. Tips are for restaurants. Taxis if you're well off. And if you're really old fashioned, hairdressers. That's it. Full stop.

EricNorthmansmistress · 29/05/2010 19:50

Never! I pay a fee for them to deliver it, they get paid a wage. Why would I tip them? I don't tip the postie when he delivers my letters!

noplacelikehome · 29/05/2010 23:14

I get my shopping delivered by Sainsbury's.
Tipping the driver has never occurred to me.

funkychunkymunky · 29/05/2010 23:23

Ummm I never even considered it!
