Yes, yes, but for the purposes of singing on the terraces, it is 'Eng-er-land'. If you start getting all pedantic about syllables, you will just sound like a twat

BigFatSepticToe · 28/05/2010 14:41

its only ing-ger-land to rhyme with the 'ere we go tune though

we don't sing "in ing-ger-lands green and pleasant land" at the proms do we!

YouDontRememberMeDoYou · 28/05/2010 14:41

You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
Theres only one way to beat them
Get round the back
Catch me if you can
Cos' I'm the England man
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan
We ain't no hooligans
This ain't a football song
Three lions on my chest
I know we can't go wrong

So there.....

Harimo · 28/05/2010 14:42

Nothing to do with footie chants - if ING-GER-LAND works better, then fine.

Its normal conversation, when someone says 'I live in INGERLAND'

NO YOU DON'T... you live in England!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
BlauerEngel · 28/05/2010 14:42

mmm, etymologically speaking it started off as three syllables, didn't it? I seem to remember it in medieval documents (Chaucer? Domesday Book?) as something like Engerlond. Maybe the three syllable fans are just harking back to the good old days 700 years back.

Agree with Madam Deathstare that the prevalence of 'geddit' is far more pernicious.

Harimo · 28/05/2010 14:44

How old are you, BlauerEngel??????

OP posts:
mosschops30 · 28/05/2010 14:46

Get over yourself, it works well in songs

better than listening to endless chants of WAY-YALS like I have to throughout the six nations!

We're all at it, dont just blame the eng-er-lish

Harimo · 28/05/2010 14:51

I don't mind it in songs..

It's normal conversation that gets me

OP posts:
mosschops30 · 28/05/2010 14:59

Oh yeah deffo weird in normal convo

JaneS · 28/05/2010 15:03

To be really pedantic, Englaland/ Ingelonde (3/4 syllables) were common in the North for a long time. The standardization of spelling is Southern-biased, so really all you are doing is crushing the poor mistreated Northerners when you say this.

Harimo · 28/05/2010 15:08

I am a poor mistreated northerner... And have never heard that!!

Harimo, I'm talking about a few centuries ago ... I think you are not quite that old!

Screamin - nope, it's not. Other way around.

(Goes to write paper and stops being a medievalist now)

Greensleeves · 28/05/2010 16:25

screaming that is arse, you know

"land" is a teutonic suffix

"Eng" is from "Angle", so Frankish

so tis a contraction of the two main consituent cultures

but it does only have two syllables

I see your posts sometimes Madame D, and they often worry me. What goes on in that mind of yours all day I wonder.
