to think that baby photo competitions are sick

Says it all really.

Just saw an advertisement for the "Baby of the Year" photo competition at our local Debenhams.

What sort of people enter their babies in these things? Aren't all babies amazing and wonderful? Why enter them, without their consent, in such ridiculous, superficial contests?

If the parents want to why not? I might do - but just for a laugh and for the free photo that they give you.

YANBU

I don't know what factors are used to judge the bonniness of the baby - the only happy person at the end of it is the mother of the baby that wins. It's very upsetting for the othermothers because each believes their own is the best-looking.

Cruel competitions - should be banned.

me!!! i love them!

i have no idea why, because i normally hate this sort of thing
but you know, why shouldn't we show off our lovely babies?
and you usually get some nice pictures at a good price to give to family and friends!

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 20:55

oh and btw, none of mine have ever won one either. but i still do them

usualsuspect · 26/05/2010 20:55

Not keen myself ..wouldn't call them sick tho

HecateQueenOfWitches · 26/05/2010 20:56

I don't think they are sick.

ABatInBunkFive · 26/05/2010 20:57

YABU - There is plenty in the world that is sick, baby comps don't even compare. Now teeny beauty pagents....

bluebump · 26/05/2010 20:57

I won a baby competition when I was little! I'm not sure that I would put my DS in one though - I certainly wouldn't call them sick.

JackBauer · 26/05/2010 20:58

I hate them. And because of DD2's hair I am always accosted by the bloody photographers and told I must enter. They are not happy when I start explaining that I don't particualrly want my daughters to be judged by their appearance at their age. At volume.
I fear we are in a minority though.

chaya5738 · 26/05/2010 21:01

but there are plenty of ways to show off your lovely babies - go sit in the park with them. Entering them in a competition were a bunch of strangers tell you who is the cutest (and whether your is or not) seems like a strange way of doing it. What values are you passing on to children? That your worth is measured by a photo?

only thing sick about them is when the winner is fucking ugly, as always seems to happen imho

paisleyleaf · 26/05/2010 21:05

I want to say yanbu - but I'm not sure "sick" is the right word for it.
I hate them. Our local paper does it and you should see the queues!! Honestly they line up for a couple of hours (not much fun for a baby). What a waste of an afternoon. It's funny what's important to some people.

Anste · 26/05/2010 21:06

Its like saying my baby is better than your baby. No matter what MOST mums think their baby is the best.

chesgirlNOTgriffins · 26/05/2010 21:13

But mine are the best.

I dont think they are sick. When I lived in Islington the local paper had one every year. I used to enter the kids because I got a picture at a reasonable price taken at the same time every year.

I never expected them to win. In all the years they were in it was only ever won by blonde, blue eyed kids. I never saw it won by any mixed race, black, turkish, chinese child. Understandable in Windsor, not so understandable in one of the most culturally diverse areas in the country.

Pozzled · 26/05/2010 21:18

I don't like them either. But I think calling them sick is a little OTT.

IveStillGotIt · 26/05/2010 21:49

I dont think they're sick, it's just abit of fun, I entered ds in Baby of the Year and the Happy Tots contest (0-5), that my local paper runs once a year.
However I knew he wouldn't win, because it's always ugly kids that win!
The first Happy Tots was a TOTAL FIX! The winner was the daughter of a footballer, and one of the judges happened to be the sports editor of the paper!!!
However if I have anymore dc's, I will still enter them, as you do get a nice photo pack.

2shoes · 26/05/2010 21:50

yanbu
I think it is the parents who just need attention

MumInBeds · 26/05/2010 21:54

I don't know if it is the same everywhere but around here the winner is the baby with the most votes on a competition phone line, it is a popularity contest and probably a massive money spinner for the photographers.
