To want a dishwasher?

legaleagle21 · 26/05/2010 09:39

We are currenty having a new kitchen put in and i thought it would be a good idea to have a dishwasher. I am just wondering what people that have them think.

My husband is dead against it - says it is a waste of money and they recycle dirt! Says he knows 'loads' (not sure who all these people he talks to about dishwashing are!)that have them and never use them.

He does his bit in terms of the washing up - so it is not a case of him saying we dont need one but he never washes up.

I thinbk one would be good if only for hiding dirty dishes and making the place look tider than having dishes on the draining board.

I have one and dont think i could manage without it, there are 6 people living im my house and the dishwasher is great otherwise i would spend all day washing dishes..

BooBooChicken · 26/05/2010 09:44

i love mine.
it is one of my most-favouritest-things-in-the-world. ever.
get one.

Bonsoir · 26/05/2010 09:45

A dishwasher is a totally vital piece of equipment - it saves hours of labour a week and washing up done in a dishwasher is a lot cleaner and more hygienic than washing up done by hand.

Mowgli1970 · 26/05/2010 09:46

YANBU - I love mine too! They're fantastic. Dirty dishes washed, dried and hidden away until you've got chance to put them away.

rubyslippers · 26/05/2010 09:46

if you have the space, then i wouldn't hesitate

am not sure how he thinks they recycle dirt

I use mine every day - 4 of us eating up to 3 meals plus drinks every day is a lot of plates, pots & pans etc

TBH, it wouldn't even be up for discussion - just get one

senseofhumourfailure · 26/05/2010 09:47

There are only 3 of us in my house and I love having our dishwasher.

No having to wash up after every meal, just fling them in dishwasher, switch on at bedtime and put away in morning. They aren't too expensive to buy, we got a cheaper one for £200, the cheap tablets work just as well as the scarily expensive ones and ours only gets cleaned once a month so all that needs done in between is the little filter bit emptied and run under tap.

I would never leave dishes sitting so means don't have to do dishes before leaving house, DH also hates dishes so makes for a happy household here!

theyoungvisiter · 26/05/2010 09:47

Oh I soooooooo want a dishwasher.

But we live in a teeny flat and having a dishwasher would mean sacrificing one of my cupboards and digging up half the kitchen in order to plumb it so I am still dithering.

Weirdly my DH is against it too. Do you think it's some kind of male instinct, to want to wash by the sweat of their brow alone?

mrspir8 · 26/05/2010 09:50

Everyone I know who has one adores it and says they don't know how they managed-we haven't got one yet but it's the first thing on the agenda for the new house.

We have one at work and it's a godsend.

The washing up is done a lot hotter than by hand so it's more hygenic.

Make your husband do all the washing up from now on and see how quickly he changes his mind!

Bonsoir · 26/05/2010 09:50

Men are often very reticent about household appliances and generally making the running of homes more efficient; I think they don't really understand the huge volume of work involved and how you could use the time saved to do other stuff with more value to your life.

legaleagle21 · 26/05/2010 10:12

Gosh so many replies so quickly! and all so positive. think I'll have to persuade him.

He wants a belfast sink and I have said we can't have one of them as there is no draining board- so perhaps i can compromise on him getting the sink and me the dishwasher.

My husband wasn't keen on getting our first one but now wouldn't be without it. Def get one, they are life changing

mrspnut · 26/05/2010 10:16

Mine broke down at the beginning of the month and my OH said that we could do without one and that washing up by hand wasn't so bad.

I didn't agree with him and instead went on strike - we were at the shop within 24 hours purchasing a replacement.

I will not live without a dishwasher.

autodidact · 26/05/2010 10:17

yanbu. dishwashers absolutely rock.

Bonsoir · 26/05/2010 10:18

Does your DH have scullery-maid fantasies too, to go with his romantic visions of washing up?

MissAnneElk · 26/05/2010 10:19

DH was the one who wanted one - I wasn't bothered. Strangely, since it was usually me doing the washing up.

I wouldn't be without one now.

PatriciaHolm · 26/05/2010 10:19

Heavens, my dishwasher is one of my favourite kitchen items . I wouldn't buy a kitchen that didn't have one!

mumoffourgirls · 26/05/2010 10:23

Go on dishwashing strike until he agrees to get one

hmmSleep · 26/05/2010 10:24

Get one, get one, get one!!!!!

We rented for a year 2 yrs ago whilst looking for a new house, no dishwasher, for me was living hell! I still think back and shudder at the thought!

My Dh never had a dishwasher prior to moving in with me 8 yrs ago, he now wouldn't want to be without.

Also as well as saving time and work, in my opinion, they get things cleaner than washing by hand.

timmyinatizzy · 26/05/2010 10:24

I love my dishwasher. Go out and buy one now

I use our dishwasher at Christmas when we have peole round for lunch and perhaps 3 or 4 more times a year when we entertain half a doz or more people

The rest of the time it is used to store beer and the kids pop

I think they are overated and would not use them every couple of days but they are good for filling up after dinner parties

hmmSleep · 26/05/2010 10:27

I agree totally sunshine, when renting we were seriously tempted to put the washing machine into storage so we could fit a dishwasher in instead!

Kathyjelly · 26/05/2010 10:28

He must be mad, within a week he'll be totally addicted to it.

And it doesn't recycle dirt, you can even use the lower rack to sterilise baby bottles and if you buy a decent one, it uses less hot water than washing & rinsing by hand.

Have we won the argument yet

siilk · 26/05/2010 10:31

When we moved back to the UK I told DH that dishwasher was a non negotiable purchase. He is now a convert!

giveitago · 26/05/2010 10:36

Must get one.

We have a small kitchen and when getting a new one I stupidly questioned the need for one over storage. My dh and the kitchen person laughed - now cue 4 years with a kid - omg - what was I thinking - I need it.
