I have to admit to my shame when I first heard about this I assumed she would be some silly teenager but 29 is old enough to work out the the sun burns and a baby on a beach all day is stupidity.

I would have said something, I have quite an abrasive personality blunt manner.
I hope the little one is doing ok today.

RooBear · 26/05/2010 13:56

I did read that a male teacher and another woman tried to tell her but she didn't understand they thought she was eastern european and a bit drunk

motherlovebone · 26/05/2010 14:01

beggers belief really.

saw a lady the other (very hot) day with tiny baby in sling with footed fleece on and hat.

she had on flip flops, vest and shorts.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 26/05/2010 14:21

What an awful story. I hope the baby is okay.

I hope the crowd were cheering because they'd been trying to get her to shade the baby with no luck. Awful to think that they just all sat there while the child burned and then cheered when someone got off their backside and did something about it.

homebirthmummy - I would just keep a newborn in the shade at all times in the summer, rather than try and find a sunscreen for a baby under three months. They're not really moving around anyway, so pretty easy to keep in one place!

My husband told me about this story last night when he got in from work after hearing it on the radio and he was shocked. It takes alot to shock him and he said its disgusting at the mother hasnt put sun creame on him if she didnt. But to let him burn like that

It's probably due to the ethics of testing on new borns.

pjmama · 26/05/2010 16:35

Hard to believe that anyone could be this bloody stupid!?

She should have been charged with neglect.

borderslass · 26/05/2010 17:26

The baby has been released from hospital into the care of his MOTHER.

southeastastra · 26/05/2010 17:33

haven't been following story at all but surely the burns couldn't have been that bad if he's been released already?

borderslass · 26/05/2010 17:38

he's been released but is still under going treatment, any burns in a baby are bad though.

addictedisalmosthalfway · 26/05/2010 17:39

southsea, he was hospitilised on sunday thats a 3 day hospital stay for 'sun burn' thats quite serious.

Alicetheinvisible · 26/05/2010 17:48

I was talking to someone the other day who was telling me about a recent trip to spain where a family nearby left their children asleep on a sunlounger for 4hrs while they sat at the bar.
The family were quite rowdy and a lot of them hence she didn't say anything (was on her own) but the poor kids were red

It just seems such a basic need doesn't? Making sure your child is ok?

insertexpletive · 26/05/2010 17:52

madamdeathstare I have factor 50 Nivea for babies. It states suitable from 3 months - my children are older than this, but the formula seems more gentle than the kids stuff and they have sensitive skin.

maristella · 26/05/2010 18:45

absolutely horrendous poor baby

SilveryMoon · 26/05/2010 19:10

madamdeathstare I think you can get something on prescription from your gp if you are very concerned.
Last year when my ds2 was a very young baby, I used sun block that was suitable from 6 months although he was younger.
The way I saw it, the benefit of applying sunblock outweighed the possible risks of unsuitable creams iyswim.

Squitten · 26/05/2010 19:21

According to the newpaper reports I read today, the mother was totally hammered so that would explain why she didn't notice/care

mumbar · 26/05/2010 19:24

yes and you can buy sun protective all in one swimmers etc.

I am actually shocked someone could do this and not even realise.

prettyfly1 · 26/05/2010 19:54

This story stunned me. I had my baby in the garden with us on sunday. He had factor fifty on (six months plus - he is five months but I felt the benefits outweighed the risk in this instance) he was under shade all day and was given water regularly, plus taken in for a couple of hours at a time. I couldnt imagine allowing him to get burned. Even my elder son who has meditteranean skin was plastered and burned slightly despite this- I felt so guilty. STUPID woman.

Hats off to the students who got the baby help. I read that they spoke to the mum several times and she wasn't bothered :-(
