AIBU to have reported a 70 year old granny to the police for maliciously damaging my car?

As the thread title goes, I could not believe my eyes when a 70 year old maliciously scratched my car this evening. I was sitting in the car with my DD who is 10 months while waiting for my DS who is four who was at football practise. This granny was walking her dog and I thought it strange that she was walking so close to my car when there was so much space. I didnt think anything of it until I saw her peering into my car (passenger door, I was sitting in the front). I initially thought she was going to open my car door and nick something but she wanted to see if there was anyone in the car before getting her keys out of her pocket and deeply scratching my whole passenger door.

I opened my car door, saw the scratch and immediately confronted her on her actions. Her response was that I was parked on a pavement (which I wasnt) so that is why she had scratched my car. I then told her that was rubbish as we cant all go around breaking the law and taking it into our own hands because we dont like something. Well basically she admitted doing it and I just called the police because she was getting mouthy. Instead of just apologising for her actions she was developing a serious attitude. Anway to cut a long story short she was given an on the spot fine and cautioned. My insurance company will also be recovering all the money they will spend fixing my car from her.

On one hand I feel that maybe for her those were the first signs of an illness given her age, but then I counteract that with the notion that she couldnt even be bothered to apologise and saw nothing wrong with her actions. To say I was royally pissed off is an understatement. Her son who had now turned up with her husband seemed to think that I had made it up and I just politely reminded them that their mum was caught red handed, she admitted it to the police and the call handler when I dialled 999 would surely have a record of the conversation and they would be able to hear her mouthing off. Sorry its long guys, I just really had to vent

mumofthree YANBU! I wonder if this is the same person who deliberately scratched MY car all along the passenger side.

~Just because she is 70, doesnt mean she can do as she pleases!

mumofthreesweeties · 25/05/2010 22:28

you can only be in the paper if they have a picture of you, and your dc's standing by the car, looking sad and pointing at the scratch.

AngelaCarleen · 25/05/2010 22:32

Why do you have to pay the excess and lose no claims if they're going after her for cost?

You should put your DC's in clothes that are too small and have them rubbing their little tummies for that picture because she's bankrupted you

Missus84 · 25/05/2010 22:37

"you can only be in the paper if they have a picture of you, and your dc's standing by the car, looking sad and pointing at the scratch"

Made me think of the Angry People in Local Newspapers blog

Granny Car Scratch Anger

fireupthequattro · 25/05/2010 22:40

oh Missus, peeing myself at angry mum cigarette story.

Why was she angry, wasn't it her babies chosen brand of fags? How old is that baby to be enjoying a Happy Meal?

southeastastra · 25/05/2010 22:53

No, why is her age and the fact she has granchildren relevent?
She's a vandal. Her age, sex and fecundity are irrelevent.

missseptember · 26/05/2010 12:48

Does anyone have a link for the fag and the tree thread? I feel like I'm missing out!

purlcity · 26/05/2010 13:46

Missus84...that blog is hilarious!

RunawayWife · 26/05/2010 13:51

YANBU old nut case or not, she is in the wrong

theyoungvisiter · 26/05/2010 14:01

sorry about your car mumof3 - but that blog's hilarious! I haven't larfed so hard since... well, the last MN thread.

Actually someone keyed my car a while back because I was (as they thought) parked illegally. Deeply, deeply infuriating especially as the police were very unbovvered and wouldn't even look at the CCTV.

In fact I'd been allowed into one of those pre-pay ticket barrier carparks only to find that there actually were no spaces. The attendant said that he couldn't refund my money but that this was a regular problem and the barrier miscounted or something . He showed me a special hatched space for overflow and told me to park there. When I came back, some charmer had keyed my car for "parking illegally".

MathsMadMummy · 26/05/2010 14:07

oh oh where is the tree/fag thread? was away from MN for a while... pleeeease link

oh and YANBU obviously!

notsureatall · 26/05/2010 14:16

I read this first of all as "AIBU to have reported MY 70 year old granny to the police for maliciously damaging my car?"

In which case I'd have said YABU. But as it was someone else's granny...that's OK.

mumofthreesweeties · 26/05/2010 14:28

ROFL at notsureatall

omg that tree thread is amazing!!!

Lemonylemon · 26/05/2010 15:38

I was "stalked" for several weeks last year while parking on a certain road near our railway station. Every night I'd come back to my car which had a sticker on one of the windows saying it would be safer if I parked in a local car park (at £3.40 per day, I don't think so). The sticker was one of those which you couldn't peel off, you had to wet it. It was written by someone who was clearly ancient....

This went on for ages and in the end I got so fed up with this person watching what I was doing, that I phoned the community police.

One of their officers went to a certain house near where I parked my car and had a word with a certain person and I haven't had any stickers since....

I don't feel at all guilty about reporting them - if they're going to be antisocial, then they can pay the price for it as far as I'm concerned....

diddl · 26/05/2010 15:43

You did the right thing.
And if she thought you were parked on the pavement she should have called the police.

I phoned police about car parked on the pavement & they said they couldn´t -wouldn´t(?) do anything about it if pedestrians could still get by.

ohnelly · 26/05/2010 16:32

YANBU!!! at all
