Scene setter............

On the Jeremy Vine show this afternoon there was an item about the child rape case. JV quoted from a newspaper "they put their willies insider her" This was at lunchtime - well before any watershed.

My 5 year old daughter was sat within earshot of this and heard it. It is tmi I don't think that I have ever heard that kind of information on a news programme before and I was shocked that they could broadcast it at that time.

When I spoke to the producer he said that they went into the relevant news items in more depth than news bulletins and the implication was that I was in the wrong for allowing my dd listen to it rather than JV for saying it on national radio

If you child is going to be listening to news items then you need to be able to discuss the issues that arise or not let her listen in the first place if she is not old enough to comprehend.

It wouldn't have been the very first comment made in the discussion and bearing it in mind that the item was about child rape, you would have adequate warning of the nature of the show.

I accept that perhaps the onus was on me to police the radio more carefully - I will not have radio 2 on between 12 and 2 anymore!

I think we will be safer listening to radio 4 from now on!!

I still don't think that he should have read out that quote though. My child can hear the word rape and not really understand, as an adult I already know what it means, I don't need to have explained to me.

Well done radio 2 - one less listener

I do see what you mean but surely adults, (mostly women) should be able to access the news at that time?

jpg · 25/05/2010 16:54

SF it was the most graphic explanation I heard made about rape on JV, I have no idea about afterwards as I switched the radio off

Why didn't you switch the station when that item came on?

They can't not discuss things just because a child somewhere may be listening...

Our local BBC station gives a few seconds warning before such content so you have the choice to listen or not

jpg · 25/05/2010 16:59

We had no warning, he just said it.

I obviously am being unreasonable - no change there then

I will just avoid JV from now on - simples

YANBU.

BusyMissIzzy · 25/05/2010 17:53

I think YANBU. I know it was a news story but it's basically a graphic description of a sexual act. I'd have been shocked if I'd heard it too, at that time of day. I don't think you should've had to switch off at the first mention of the story either; discussion of a rape case would mostly go over a 5yo's head, and I'm sure you didn't expect them to describe the act in such detail.

GerbilMeasles · 25/05/2010 18:58

YANBU to be cross, hate that the media seems to be taking such a prurient attitude to this case - yes, it's news but some of the coverage is a bit icky.

YABU, however, to be listening to JV. He's a pretentious, patronising tosser.

DetectivePotato · 25/05/2010 19:29

YANBU, surely there was no need for this to be said. We all know what rape is ffs.

jpg · 25/05/2010 21:09

Oh good, I am not totally unreasonable then I obviously feel that I wasn't but as I posted in AIBU I had to accept the opinion of the masses .

GerbilMeasles, I beg your forgiveness, I generally just leave it on after Zen Bruce although if he JV is being a total tosser I do switch him off - I will be switching off at 12 every day now

Yanbu Mind you Radio 4 is no good either - they get very graphic sometimes...me and DH have developed a very swift lunge response as we dive for the power button in the morning...the today prog is fine but when the news comes jeeze there's sometimes a clash of heads over the cornflakes.

jpg · 25/05/2010 21:52

I am quite amazed by this, it does alienate a large proportion of one's listening audience (those who haven't been put off by the awful JV).

Anyone got any thoughts as to what I can listen to during those two hours when the vile JV is broadcasting?? I am far too old and staid for R1
