to not go to the primary athletics carnival

Primary athletics carnival is a "compulsory school day" and held off site. A lot of parents go to watch, but I really don't want to. DS2 will spend his day sitting outside watching other people do their thing (he is 11 and totally non-sporty); I don't really see what value I add by spending my day there doing the same. If he was actually participating in events it would be different.

By Thursday I will have spent two mornings at school this week reading/scribing for senior exams, and on Friday I will spend my usual weekly hour running a literacy programme with kids who need help. I'm happy to do this but I have other stuff at home that I need to get on with as well and I'm not feeling particularly well at the moment so sitting in the cold for 5 hours (it's nearly Winter here) is totally unappealing. DS2 wants me to "be there" and there is no real reason why I can't be - would I be the meanest mummy in history to not go?

If it was me, I'd go. It sounds like maybe he's a bit unhappy about the fact that he's non-sporty and will be stuck there watching other people doing their thing, so the "value" would be for moral support for him.

But 11 is old enough to understand if you're not feeling well enough to sit around in the cold all day.

I'd go. Wrap up warm and take a flask of coffee. I know how unappealing it is though!

I wouldn't go. It sounds like you already do more than your share of things for the school and your ds is old enough to understand why you don't want to.

My ds is 8 and recently wanted me to attend a (second) assembly for a cd his choir had made. I said no as I had already attended the first one and he was fine with it.

Mind you, it does sound foul for your ds. How about a nice jammie day at home with you instead?

sunnydelight · 24/05/2010 10:28

I'm very tempted to do a jammie day MarthaQ. I do know deep down that I should go but he would love some nice 1:1 (he's very much a "middle child" with a much older, very sporty confident older brother and a very vocal younger sister!). Didn't take much persuading, did I

Oh yes do a jammie day! Go on!

I hated sports days at school and I wish my parents would have let me spend them at home!
