...to absolutely detest England football songs?

BBC 10 O'Clock News showcasing some ghastly "tunes" from, apparently, loads on YouTube.

I hate them. I hate the "cor blimey, give us a curry and some mushy peas"-ness of them. I hate "Eng-ger-land" instead of England. There are going to be loads of these, aren't there?

When's the World Cup final? Just so I know when it's likely to end

Im going to sound abit strange, as im scottish and live in scotland, but I like the England footy songs!!!
Dp wont let me blast them out though!
My favourites are the 'sing along after 10 pints and a curry' type songs!!!
I dont think scotland have any half decent footy songs though, I used to like '500 miles' but you hear it so much in pubs, it gets on my tits now!!!

mental as eggs.scottish liking ingerland songs?bonkers as conkers

To absolutely detest England football ..... and football in general - not unreasonable at all.
Remember when I used to live in West London, coming home and trying desparately avoid the howling, drunken hordes on King St, munching on chips and littering with gusto.
Disgraceful and quite frightening.

Football is largely a working class sport.

What did you expect- an opera?

YANBU, but you are being a bit of a snob

TinyApeInBigPants · 22/05/2010 08:40

I don't agree it's a working class sport. Not these days anyway. I do think people think they sound v cultured, windswept and interesting if they say they cannot abide it

TheBride · 22/05/2010 08:47

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It's roots are as a working class sport and most of the culture associated with it- songs, chants etc, are reflective of that.

"Me, my mum, my dad and my gran, went to waterloo" etc

Not "Mater, Pater, dear Grandmother and I went to Waterloo"

Sure, middle class people watch football, but they tend not to also hang a flag out of their window/on their car/ on themselves, wear their club strip as casual wear, so a lot of what people say they hate about the world cup/football, is mainly a working class phenomenon.

However, rugby is to an extent a middle class sport and some of their songs are far,far worse so I'm not sure it's possible to take the high ground.

I quite like the world cup- I like all international spectator sport.

mehdismummy · 22/05/2010 08:53

football is shit no matter what class you are from!!

I get really uncomfortable with the anti-German sentiments because dh is half-German and I am a total Deutschophile.

The Swiss have stolen "3 lions" EVEN THOUGH THEY TOTALLY DON'T GET WHAT IT MEANS which makes me fume.

BelleDameSansMerci · 22/05/2010 09:15

I did wonder if I was being a bit of a snob...

I think what I really don't like is the sort of "mob mentality" that I associate with the songs. I don't actually dislike the game of football (although I will be avoiding it as much as possible) as it is quite exciting to watch but I do hate the hysteria it causes and I genuinely can't understand why people get so worked up about a game. The songs seem to be the ultimate expression of yobbish-ness.

Aaaaaaaaaand, wasn't there an Opera song for one World Cup anyway?

Oh, and I am as English as can be (if such a thing is actually possible) and although I don't actually care who wins, it would be nice if it were England for lots of people who aren't Scottish.

I think there is definitely a tribal mentality to most of the songs, but I think that's just international sport. It is by nature.....well...........tribal.

YANBU to not want to listen to the songs all summer, but I think it's just part of the atmosphere tbh. To many people, football is a massive part of their lives. That doesnt excuse rioting and smashing stuff up when your team loses, but it really is a small and idiotic minority that do that.

brightyoungthing · 22/05/2010 10:24

Let me introduce you please to a lump of cheddar cheese........... I love that one

curryfreak · 22/05/2010 15:09

I wouldn't worry. They'll be knocked out pretty smartish!
then the lovely england fans will go on the rampage, and do what they do best,- behave like moronic thugs.
Donta just love the national game!
