I put the raincover over my DD when she's sleeping, it blocks the noise out a bit.

Sassybeast · 21/05/2010 13:42

Perhaps the occupants have chicken pox - there is a lot of it around at the minute.

PigeonsInFlight · 21/05/2010 13:43

Maybe people think the cover will drop their LO from getting sunburnt?

I don't really know but I see people with raincovers on their prams in all sorts of weathers and have often wondered why. But then I never ever put the raincover on DDs buggy, even when it was raining!

Meglet · 21/05/2010 13:44

I have a bit of a judgy thing about this too .

I don't understand why you would put a raincover on when it's not rainy?! Mind you, mine never slept in the buggy.

But to do it in this weather is crazy.

PigeonsInFlight · 21/05/2010 13:44

doh stop not drop!

azazello · 21/05/2010 13:45

I have done this very occasionally when I take the pushchair to the shops with the raincover in the bottom and buy slightly too much... Its on for about 10 mins so don't think DS would have found it a problem.

I'd be more worried about the small girl I saw earlier today with a coat, tights, skirt and knee blanket on. She looked a bit zonked, poor thing.

hocuspontas · 21/05/2010 13:45

I thought I'd read on here it was to stop old ladies leaning over and touching PFBs.

TheLifeOfRiley · 21/05/2010 13:46

could be that the child has hayfever

Katz · 21/05/2010 13:48

i have to agree with you I rarely used raincovers - had a pushchair poncho was great packed very small and kept the DD's dry.

NorbertDentressangle · 21/05/2010 13:50

To keep bugs out??? (bugs of the flying/buzzing/stinging variety that is)

Must be like a greenhouse in there though

MoneyNoPockets · 21/05/2010 13:56

I use the raincover if windy or wet and at other times it is folded down under the leg rest, we have a protect-a-bub on now.

Yesterday got told by a mother that i would 'cook' the baby as it is black, but is open so air in, whereas she had a very thick blanket entirely enclosing her pram, yes it was white but no air flow, i pointed this out to her very calmly as not the first time i have been questioned on it, Italians were agast at a very pale baby not lying in the (UV10) sunshine, she was very offended and huffed and we both continued on our way.

Walking around hyde park area it is amazing the number of prams covered by blankets, which do nothing to limit UV exposure but do reduce airflow by a huge amount.

AndieWalsh · 21/05/2010 13:57

I put the raincover on when it's windy or if my DD seems tired and I think she might fall asleep. It blocks out a bit of outside stimulation.

Wouldnt do it in the heat, though.

biddysmama · 21/05/2010 14:00

have you stuck your head in the shade a babe thing? its lovely and cool in there!

"'d be more worried about the small girl I saw earlier today with a coat, tights, skirt and knee blanket on. She looked a bit zonked, poor thing."

phew - it was a girl thought you'd seen my DS3 the other day , thick winter coat, wellie boots, jeans and trousers (hood up on his jacket as well!) - it was boiling hot like today..............but it' what he insisted on wearing

FlyMeToDunoon · 21/05/2010 14:11

hate seeing babies completely enveloped in plastic rain covers, indoors or ouside in sun.
Also Babies with hats on indoors in warm places.

Colonelcupcake · 21/05/2010 14:13

Maybe they are very contagious?

MoneyNoPockets · 21/05/2010 14:17

Shade a babe allows airflow Biddysmama, blankets don't.

NewBirdOnTheBlock · 21/05/2010 15:16

I have a shade a babe and love it, it's like a mini fridge in there, like magic, not sure how it works

I have a throw over raincover which I rarely use in the rain never mind the sun but yeah, must be like a green house in there, poor kids

BouncingTurtle · 21/05/2010 15:51

I use the rain cover when it's not raining, when there is a cold breeze - especially as I tend to walk quite fast so poor ds is getting it straight in the face! But certainly I wouldn't use it in hot weather like this! Mine has a warning not to use it in hot weather or indoors!

I am more distressed that there is a product on the market called 'Shade-A-Babe / Bub'

gillybean2 · 21/05/2010 16:52

Maybe it's to protect a bit from exhaust fumes. Baby in buggy is about the right height to get full blast of exhaust fumes when, especially if passing slow moving/stationary traffic.

No idea really, just thinking it may be a possibility
