AIBU to formally complain to supermarket - two mouldy items in a fortnight!!

Two weeks ago I bought some cheese at local
supermarket, opened it up when I got home to discover the start of some mould. When I checked the sell by date it was the day before. Took it back and they apologised and replaced it.

Figured I should have checked the date before paying so didn't make a fuss and just accepted the replacement.

Popped in tonight for some pizza bases, checked the sell by date (end June) but I've just opened it up and it has 2 big patches of horrible black mould on it. Going to take it back and really want to get stroppy.

AIBU to kick up a fuss - am 30 week pregnant and really fancy throwing a temper tantrum (am also getting a bit paranoid about getting food poisioning from this place!!!)

YANBU - you must complain, it sounds as though they arn't storing their food correctly and that's worrying frankly.

YANBU. You must complain. Maybe enviromental health needs a phone call as well.

BigFatSepticToe · 20/05/2010 19:49

by all means take it back, complain, get your money back and if lucky a goodwill gesture of a token or something for your inconvenience

BUT, keeping it in perspective, how many items have you bought there in the last month, or year, and how many were mouldy?

sealed packets sometimes get a tiny split or pinprick hole in them, so that even appearing sealed and in date, they go off. no ones fault, just one of those things!

I agree with bafe, it sounds like they have a storage issue. Cheese shouldn't be going mouldy a day after its use by.

IMoveTheStars · 20/05/2010 19:52

erk.. where are you buying your cheese?

JamieJay · 20/05/2010 19:57

It's one of the big supermarkets

Toe you're right in a way, I've been shopping there for 6 years without this sort of problems but it does seem to have gone down hill a bit in the last couple of months.

Will pop in and speak to the manager and base my next action on what he says.

i think if you write a "disappointed because I have shopped here for 6 years and never had any problems" & "i thought you would like to know" sort of letter, you will get sent a £10 voucher for taking the time to bring it to their attention. I have done this several times!

IMoveTheStars · 20/05/2010 20:03

send an email via the website with your clubcard/nectar card/equivalent number and suggest that they credit your account with points.

I've done this with sainsbury's after getting a chicken that was very off, despite being well within use-by dates. They credited me with £5 worth of points, + the value of the chicken.

JamieJay · 20/05/2010 23:12

Well I popped in tonight and explained what had happened the two times to a (surprisingly) helpful girl on customer serivces.

Refunded me the cost of the bases, gave me a £5 voucher and said she'd raise it with the manager - may still email the nectar card website to see about the points (or is that just greedy ).

Still think I may avoid that store for a while and go elsewhere as it has made me a little nervous (blame pregnancy paranoia!)
