AIBU in thinking the swimming company is BU?

Right my DS (23 months) is starting swimming lessons at a pool where the temp is going to be 30°, I have been told by the company running the lessons that DS NEEDS (their capitals, underline AND bold!) either a wetsuit or a snugg (which of course they sell), am I being unreasonable to think this is complete bollocks and it's just another way for the company to make money out of us? Surely 30° is warm enough for a 23 month old to tolerate for 30minutes without suffering from hypothermia?

In my waterbabies class, there are some children who genuinely forget that they're in a class at all - it can be quite challenging, but there are some really littlies that respond to every instruction they're given. It's amazing how different children are, isn't it? My DD would never have stood still for anything, but DS is the polar opposite!

HI, Just thought i would offer some advice on this one if it helps. I am mum of Lily who swam with Water Babies for 4 years and is now officially a mermaid!!! I am also a fully quailified swimming instructor, so know the techy bits!! Our children do get colder in water quicker than they do on dry land but all children are different some feel the cold some don't. At Water Babies we use pools 30 degrees or warmer, some children will be very happy in that temperature some will feel the cold, Lily wore a wetsuit until she was around 30 months, she was just more comfortable and happier when she had it on. Hard sell is so not a policy that Water Babies agrees with so if you do experience this then contact your local office and speak to them as and they will want to make sure that the level of service offered to all mummies and daddies is the best that it can be. All instructors will have spare wetsuits poolside so that should anyone need to borrow one for the lesson then they are able to. Hope that helps and that you are loving your lessons, Lily is just 5 and has just got her 50 metres badge and just loves having fun in the water what more could i ask for.

Wetsuits for splashing around in are fine, but I don't think they should be teaching kids to swim in them. They provide a lot of buoyancy and inhibit movement.

hi there
i work for waterbabies

it is a recommendation that the children wear something to keep them warm in they are in a normal pool that is around 30 degrees
a hydrotherapy pool of about 35 menas they dont usually need a wetsuit

i have several wetsuits that i keep in my kit for people to borrow, but on a first come first served basis, and they can be wet from previous class and for that reason i recommend people have their own,

however a few points to make here,

you dont have to buy them from waterbabies if you dont want to, they are made by splashabout, there are other makes on the market but i would highly recommend splashabout for their durability
check out splash about website, also can be bought on ebay for condiserably cheaper if you dont mind a second hand one

i would say you get quite good use out of the 6-18month size, and of course if you have your own you can use it when you go swimming in your local pool :0)

nearly 2 years is coming up to age where they may be ok without one
how did your little one go without it?

i know most of my 3 year olds dont wear them now
the problem is if a child gets cold you cannot warm them up by putting a wetsuit on after they are cold, it requires the child to get out and dry to warm up :0(

does this help at all?
how did you get on?
