I've been teaching today (Foundation ) and its been a really hot day, ok the sun hasn't been out all of the time but its been warm all day. The weather forecast has said it will be hot all week. Was very surprised to lots of my class in vests today, I noticed when they took their jumpers off or in some cases when I insisted they took their jumpers off when they were really hot and sweaty !

My own children only wear vests in the middle of winter surely they dont need them in May !

But is the May referred to the month or the blossom? Never been sure of that one - personally I think it is the blossom, which is well and truly out, so you can safely cast those clouts!

MrsTicklemouse · 21/05/2010 11:31

Thats crazy! Don't they realise there are much higher risks associated with overheating than being a bit chilly, unless of course you happen to be in the arctic!

Mind you mine stopped wearing vests at about 6 months!

majafa · 21/05/2010 11:44

Mine are 8 & 11 they dont wear them any more, as apparently its not cool!
A LO I used to mind was in thermal leggings/ wooly tights, without fail by the middle of September.

Meglet · 21/05/2010 11:47

Today was the first day my 2 toddlers haven't worn a vest. But they usually wear them, even ds who is 3.6.

I, however, still have my vest on . And thick socks. And I'm in the south.

Pikelit · 21/05/2010 11:49

An Aged Pagan Crone writes...

It's the May blossom. Not the month of May.

Thus in theory it has been reasonable to discard one's underpinnings for a while now. That one would have caught pewmoniah is another matter altogether.

notquitenormal · 21/05/2010 11:54

I'm still sending DS to nursery in along sleeved top over a t-shirt as well as a jacket. That's 'cause it's often very chilly in the mornings and they can add or remove layer as appropriate.

They don't seem to get this though and hand him over (after an entire day) still with his jumper on saying, 'he's been a bit warm today'

I'm gonna switch to cardigans I think.

SilveryMoon · 21/05/2010 11:55

My ds's are 15 months and 2.9 years. I never put vests on them if it's going to be over 21 degrees.

EightiesChick · 21/05/2010 12:04

notquitenormal I take my DS's cardigan off when I drop him at nursery, and then if needsbe they can put it on him (when he goes into the garden usually) but the default is that it stays off indoors.

I do usually still put a vest on my DS, but haven't today. Yesterday nursery took his off - they are v sensible about these things.

MamaVoo · 21/05/2010 12:45

My MIL is scandalised that I don't put a vest on DS when it's warm. Apparently little one's should wear them regardless of the temperature

My late father was never without a vest, even in Portugal.
Dsi si still wearing one, even though he is in linen breeks and a tee shirt.
I love a man in a vest.

Pikelit · 21/05/2010 13:26

Dp cannot be wrested from his vests. Luckily they are not of the Rab C Nesbitt variety and can, if you squint a bit, look more like a T-shirt.

BarefootShirl · 21/05/2010 13:34

My DS & DD have never worn vests - the subject just never arose and I'm sure very few of their friends do either. I remember the battles with my mother when I was young - I never wanted to wear one but she insisted in winter so I used to go without but still keep putting them in the washing basket each day . Having said that, I have never felt the cold and was always running around naked as a kid - and still do .

Bathsheba · 21/05/2010 13:34

I gave my 6 year old dd1 the choice to wear a vest or not today - she thought about it and chose to wear one.

She has her gingham school dress on top and nothing else..

She wanted to wear one because she is used to wearing one and "likes the feel of it as its cosy".

All my girls wear vests but we live in Aberdeen and its usually cold here

LostArtofKeepingASecret · 21/05/2010 13:37

I've never put my two in vests, I was surprised that it's still done. But DD (5) came home from school saying that a boy shouted that he could see her boobies, so she wears them for PE now.

mixedraceparents · 21/05/2010 13:37

My seven year old came home from school laughing the other day. He said one of the boys had not had his vest on and they had all laughed at his tummy.

I guess at that age that kind of stuff is funny. My son INSISTS on wearing his vest and its 100% to do with getting changed for sports.

lizziemun · 21/05/2010 14:31

I think it personnal preference. I taken my children vest off today, but if it gets cold later I'll put their vest back on.

Although I did feel sorry for a little girl I saw yesterday when walking home from school.

She was about 3 and she was all red and crying and her mum was telling to get move on. But the little girl must have been boiling as she was wearing wooly tighs a long sleeved polo shirt under a cord pinifore dress.

MedusaHead · 21/05/2010 14:39

YANBU when I suggested to my DD (5) that she didn't need to wear a vest today she replied "but I might get a cold blast down my front and I would be freezing".

I have to pick my battles with her and this was one I was happy to let go. I managed to persuade her that it was warm enough for ankle socks though, so I was happy with that.

RedTartanLass · 21/05/2010 14:47

Ah squever you beat me too it!! Ne'er cast a cloot till May is oot.

maximinimum · 21/05/2010 14:51

QOD - my dd (11) is the same - won't take her jumper off even when scorching in case people notice she has boobs.... Wonder when she will grow out of this! She hasn't worn a vest since she was a baby though.

SarfEasticated · 21/05/2010 18:19

The thought of DD (2.5) without a vest makes me feel a bit peaky - she wears the little cotton ones with thin straps, not the ones with poppers underneath. I love them with a slightly odd passion, especially when stretched over a round tummy.

notcitrus · 21/05/2010 18:33

Wouldn't have thought so, but I met toddlers today taken out in wooly tights, trousers, vest, jumper, coat and hat, who seemed content.

Ds however hates being too hot with a passion, so has spent the day in a loose t-shirt and nappy (and trousers when we went out). I'd reminded nursery that he hates heat and would probably need to be stripped to his nappy once the sun shines into baby room in the afternoon, but suspect the worker who wasn't there last summer thought I was exaggerating - until she had to deal with him screaming until he was undressed and sponged down, at which point he was all smiles again. He's currently sleeping in just a nappy and cuddle blanket as was too hot in a grobag!

mumbar · 21/05/2010 18:49

DS 5 won't wear them in winter now. Went to school today in shorts and t-shirt refusing a jumper. TBH it was warm enough when we left at 8am so no probs really.

He is one that will wear his jumper when its 20 degs + outside if he has it on, so best he doesn't IYSWIM.

kolacubes · 21/05/2010 19:55

yesterday dh did not put vest on ds as it was warm enough according to dh. ds made sure that his vest was ready to put on this morning!!!
