To think that a Dr, should know the difference

between a viral infection and chicken pox?

Last night (and for the last 4 nights) ds2 has had a temperature, which we assumed was from his teeth (currently has 5 teeth cutting) , but as he cant have calpol or (sugar added medicine) all we can do is cool him down with flannels and strip him down

Last night was the last straw and we took him to the walk in centre, as his temp was 39.1 and he was very upset, and extremely restless, Dr their said it was hand, foot and mouth, and that his chest and ears were clear, and we just had to keep doing what we were doing and allow it to run its course.

Today, Ds was visibly in pain, so phoned the Dr again for emergency appointment, seen Dr and she is shocked that we left him this long as he has a chest infection and a ear infection, which is really bad, but shes is not sure if he has chicken pox, as atm, he has 3 different kinds of rashes, one IS chicken pox rash, other is viral and the other is a heat rash.

but she cant say if he has chicken pox or not, the spots are blistered and weeping but still she is unsure!

Im angry at the 1st Dr, for just her lax professionalism and the second Dr for being so humming and ahem, they wont prescribe anything due to his allergies for the CP, but have gave powder Anti B to put in his water, (which would be good, if he could blooming well drink, but as his mouth is covered in blisters, he cant)!

So now my little man is very uncomfortable, cant take the anti b, and we basically have been left to get on with it ourselves, with no advice or help.

seriously thinking of going to A&E, as he has had nothing to drink in 12 hours and nothing to eat in 4 days.

AIRBU to just want a component Dr, instead of "might" buts and "maybes"

Grrrrr........

Anti-b is antibiotic, he cannot have any syrupy medicine, he is 9 months and allergic to the syrup, so he needs powdered anti-b.

I will state AGAIN! I do KNOW! that CP is a virus!!!, and WILL NOT need anti b, that's not what I was asking, I was expecting they can make him comfortable, as he cannot have any pain meds, or antihistamines normal prescription due to his allergies.

He cannot have the camomile due to the zinc.

Don't use calamine as it can dry the skin, exacerbating the itching.

Try bicarb of soda in the bath (a couple of mugfuls in a warm but not too warm bath). Can he have paediatric dispersible paracetamol? Usually very simple with no sugars, colouring etc.

Leave him naked as clothes will itch and if he has blisters in his mouth let him suck ice poles if he wants. (you can make your own)

Glad it's being seen to - Boy allergies are a bastard aren't they?

You'll need to check the ingredients but when mine had CP I found calamine cream that wasn't drying at the chemist. Hydrated calamine lotion??? Aqualated??? Can't remember the word.

Good luck - poor you! x

there is something new called virasoothe, not sure of the ingredients. and there was another one, but can't remember the name. Pharmacist in local chemist hadnt heard of them, but I found them in a big Boots.

Can you make milk lollies???

LittleMrsHappy · 21/05/2010 14:08

No, hes allergic, to dairy, lactose and any form of citrus protein, which is in most foods and ALOT of medicine, as it acts as a natural preservative. He is hypersensitive to any of these groups, so unfortunately he can only have his semi elemental milk or water.

I have frozen his milk, and also frozen some carrots, and water, hopefully iy will ease them, and thankyou to the two last posters I have jotted them down and off to boots as we speak, ds is looking to be discharged at 4-5 pm x
