We had our sign stolen when we sold our last house! We were just left with a post. We are definitely not poncey.

diddl · 20/05/2010 12:23

Ours was sold before the sign went up.
MmeLindt-they do have "for sale" signs in Germany-but it´s the exception rather than the rule.

pedrothellama · 20/05/2010 12:31

I once tried to view a house that I saw via the sign outside, I called the estate agents to book an appointment and she sounded cagey.

She then blurted out "I am so sorry to ask this but the owners want to know the occupation of viewers before they come round!"

I put the phone down.

Now THAT'S poncey

LadyBiscuit · 20/05/2010 12:39

It's better than an NCT sale sign

LittleMissHissyFit · 20/05/2010 14:14

No, not poncy at all. There is a house for sale around here and apparently the gaggle of those with little to do have been pouring all over the website, snorting at the decor and gasping at the price.

I don't think a sign is needed really, most of us look at property on the internet, and if someone is interested in a house in that price bracket/at that size they'll search for it online. Unlikely to do drive bys as much as people did in the past.

BeenBeta · 20/05/2010 14:16

Now what does really seem poncey is 'Price on Application'.

What the heck is that all about?

Its going to sell and then everyone can see what it sold for on the internet house price checking sites anyway. Anyone who comes to see it will ask. In any case if you look a POA house up on Rightmove they always list them in price order so you can see what the price range is it sits in anyway.

pedrothellama - thats another thing that annoys me. What occupation? Having looked at houses for years to rent and buy it seems some people really will not sell to anyone they deem unfit to own their house. Says everything I think about the housing market snobbishness in the UK. Owning a house seems to define and validate some people.

Shaz10 · 20/05/2010 14:16

All I do on my pram walks is check out For Sale signs, then look them up when I get home. I would be lost without them!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 20/05/2010 14:17

I'll be poncy with you - never been poncy before and quite like it !

OrmRenewed · 20/05/2010 14:18

"Now what does really seem poncey is 'Price on Application'."

That is because you need to be sitting down with a stiff drink before you hear it!

Shaz10 · 20/05/2010 14:20

OrmRenewed that just says to me "you can't afford this".

EddieIzzardismyhero · 20/05/2010 14:20

Isn't that the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" brigade?!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 20/05/2010 14:20

Lol! x-posted shaz!

This is my dad all over. House is going up for sale shortly and he will not allow a for sale board to be put up, as he doesn't want all in sundry knowing his business. He also reckons he can just go to the estate agent and ask if anyone is looking for a house in his street, without actually advertising it anywhere. Err no father that is not going to work.

piprabbit · 20/05/2010 14:28

My house is in a dead-end so we have nobody passing by on their way anywhere. If we had a sign up, the only people who would see it are our neighbours - and they would probably know anyway because I'd tell them.

A sign would be a waste of a bit of cardboard and a post.

Mishy1234 · 20/05/2010 14:31

I think it really depends on the property tbh. We've always had a sign and where we live it's standard to have open viewings on a thurs evening and sunday afternoon (in addition to appts if people ask).

If it's a really expensive property you're selling then you probably don't need a sign. There's usually a waiting list of people looking for that type of house (around here anyway, where the majority of city centre properties are flats) and maybe the owners are being poncey, but I suppose they can afford to be.

When I'm selling I want everyone to know about it! That way you get it sold quickly and generate the most notes of interest giving you maximum leverage in the blind bidding system.

BeenBeta · 20/05/2010 16:30

Fimbo - a lot of older people genuinely believe that their street is unique and house prices in their street will never go down and that there are a queue of buyers just waiting for them to decide to sell and will automatically offer their asking price.

Many estate agents quite cynically feed off this. Keep a close eye on your Dad, he may get taken for a ride by an unscrupulous agent who will tell him exactly what he wants to hear just to get him to contract then leave him hanging on at far too high a price before coming in with a low ball bid from a 'friendly' developer when he gets desperate enough to sell.

Happens a lot in my area.

Kathyjelly · 20/05/2010 16:37

The last time I sold, I wasn't offered one. I'm not sure it's to do with ponciness, more the agent wants absolute control of the viewings and doesn't want anyone tapping on the door.

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/05/2010 16:41

I'm afraid I am not looking to buy or sell but as soon as a For Sale board goes up on my street I am straight on to the internet having a good old nosey at my neighbours houses! I would NEVER have a For Sale board outside. And they make the street look tatty.

I know I keep banging on about working in property in Chelsea, but Estate Agents boards were completely banned there under the terms of the leases.

porcamiseria · 20/05/2010 16:45

what mainly happens is that the neighbours go online and have a snoop, can see why youd rather not if you are on a quiet road

the house opposite me have MINGING taste I tell ya

mangoandlime · 20/05/2010 17:14

Our new build 'development' (now that's ponce for ya!) banned for sale signs for a year after the developers had left the site, it's in our deeds.

5DollarShake · 20/05/2010 17:17

Our house will be on the market next week, but no sign for us! Visual pollution, dahling.

Our street isn't a thoroughfare and is only used by the residents, so no-one will see the fugly cardboard on a stick sign anyway. And even if it was a drive-through road, I still wouldn't put a sign up - we're not providing free advertising for random estate agents.

Our house is clearly numbered for those more challenged in the area of identifying-houses-from-an-address, plus it'll be easily locatable on rightmove and findaproperty for anyone who's actually in the market for a house in our area.

Hulababy · 20/05/2010 17:19

When we were trying to sell our apartment we were not allowed to have a sign displayed; was in our contract.

I have known people not have signs up - often if not on a throughfare it is pretty pointless, and some people don't like all their neighnours knowing.

TBH I am not really sure what the benefit of having a sign really is. Not unless you live on a road with peole passing by lots.

OrmRenewed · 20/05/2010 19:34

Yes ours is in a cul-de-sac so would only interest the neighbours
