she adores him and screams with laughter when hes near her... he would rather play out/in his room than interact with her

YANBU to get him to spend time with his Dsis, but I think YABU to call it a "job". Encourage him by flattering his ego, "look how sis finds you so funny, clever, quick etc"

Bluebell99 · 19/05/2010 16:53

How old is he? Tbh I think it may backfire and make him resent her if you make him do this.

Hassled · 19/05/2010 16:54

Yes, YABU because your DS will come to resent the baby. You can't force a relationship - it will work or it won't. But push it now and you risk buggering up their relationship for ever. He has to want to spend time with her and not see her as a burden.

larks35 · 19/05/2010 16:58

How old are they? It may help if you show him how to play with her - pulling faces, peekaboo, copying words/sounds, finger puppets. Agree that you shouldn't force him, but a bit of encouragement should be okay.

she is 14 months and he is 8, once he gets into it he enjoys it, it just doesnt occour to him to play with her

why dont you ask him if he can 'help' mummy by playing with her while you do x,y or z. At 8 he'd thrive on the responsibility of watching her for you.

But dont make it a 'job' as others have said he will come to resent her.

I have the same age gap, and went through the same quandry. D is 10 now and prone to dissappearing into his room. I now call playing together time "family time" inclusive for all and a duty for no-one. It's how we stick together. Seems to work.

DS is 10 now
