to hate self-service tills in shops?

Their presence in lots of stores is increasing all the time and I really don't like it. If I wanted to work at Tesco / Boots / B&Q etc, I'd fill in an application form like everyone else! I am there as a customer and part of that is not doing the firm's work for free. It will be an excuse to cut tons of jobs any day now, if it hasn't been already.

Plus it doesn't actually seem to save any time, given that half the stuff doesn't scan easily and you have to wait for someone to come and correct the machine.

Plus the repeated recorded instructions like 'unexpected item in bagging area' drive me up the wall.

If I'm invited to use them, I refuse - though so far I have suppressed my desire to rant about it when someone says 'would you like to use the self-service till?' That's why you're getting it here.

YANBU. I hate them. Tesco and Sainsbury are making quite enough profit to offer a decent level of customer service and having to struggle with some ghastly half-baked machine doesn't cut it with me.

Plus when I was stuck on maternity leave in a strange town, sometimes the checkout lady was the only other female I interacted with face-to face in a whole week. She's essential IMHO.

I'll stop using any shop the day they go fully self service.

ruddynorah · 19/05/2010 18:12

cupcakes we do have self service tills at my m&s so you'll probably get them at yours soon.

tip for you lot who've never worked in a shop before...you don't have to look for a barcode. hold the item just as you would take it off the shelf. so upright or whatever. then wave it across the scanners (there is one scanner underneath and one behind). the scanners will find it. if you watch cashiers that's how they do it, they don't look for the bar code, they just hold the item as it sits on the shelf IYSWIM.

GetOrfMoiLand · 19/05/2010 18:48

OOh ruddynorah that makes me want to go and do a whole week's shop on a self scanner to test your theory

valleyqueen · 19/05/2010 19:13

I hate then because the dcs always want to do it and they take bloody ages.

bruffin · 19/05/2010 19:25

I love them, except when they got them in sainsburies. The staff were really badly trained and didn't know how they worked, I had to explain it to one of them. They never filled up the bag bit. They didn't last very long in that branch, but in our little Tesco they are well staffed with people who know what they are doing.
To me good service is being able to nip in and out in 5 minutes, without queueing, not necessarily having someone doing the job for me.

Love them.

They're so much quicker than waiting for old people to get out your way at a regular checkout.

singsinthebath · 19/05/2010 20:00

valleyqueen - I would be so huffing and puffing and tutting like a mad woman if I were stuck in the queue behind you and your DCs.....

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 19/05/2010 20:02

Hate them, especially the 'unexpected item '

But sometimes I press the Cymraeg button for a bit of fun and the checkout speaks to me in Welsh!

I'm not a Welsh speaker BTW
And I don't live in Wales
I do need to get out more

pointydog · 19/05/2010 20:13

yabu. They are ok now. A few problems have been ironed out.

Who doesn't like to make a machine bleep

JennyPiccolo · 19/05/2010 20:24

i usually like them but i had a repetitive UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA experience the other day and there were no staff about and the security guard was eyeing me up. What a frustrating time of it.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 19/05/2010 20:29

I hate them with a passion - i would rather stand in a que a mile long than succumb to slef service hell and when i have used them i am the crazy woman swearign at the blardy thing. I cant hold it in any longer i also take the opportunity to tell someone who works there when prompted to use one that i will shop elsewhere rather than shop in a shop gettign rid of ncie staff in favour of stainless steel checkout assistant wankerishness and that most people hate them too and they always agree they are a shower of shit. Im in a bad mood btw .

usualsuspect · 19/05/2010 20:30

All the checkout staff hate them ...they cause them so much stress ..

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 19/05/2010 20:33

ooo ruddy i have to go do some work shopping tomoz at tesco so i might play that game to fill in some work time (not my own time!!)

flockwallpaper · 19/05/2010 20:43

YANBU. Hate them.

TheFoosa · 19/05/2010 20:54

I've seen the poor sods in Asda too, holding a big green arrow that says 'Space Here'

that is some job

DarrellRivers · 19/05/2010 21:00

Unexpected item in the bagging area
That would be my frigging bag you stupid machine

MPuppykin · 19/05/2010 21:15

30andMerkin, you have just had me and DH laughing until tears came with your DH's sausages story.

we hate self service tills. Doing the sodding shop's job for them, no discounts and we live in old biddyville too where the local sainsbury;s have NO manned tills, and old people have terrible trouble with them.

arsesandoldlace · 19/05/2010 21:15

Unhygenic things. I'm sure they contribute to the spread of colds and other viruses.

As do the checkout ladies who lick their fingers before giving me a carrier bag. Then proceed to cover my food with their saliva

I want all my shopping delivered by robots in a nice hermetically sealed pod.

Kaloki · 19/05/2010 21:19

I much prefer them

Katisha · 19/05/2010 21:25

I hated them even more when I found out the ones in Tesco are voiced by the woman who does the weird voiceover in Masterchef...

Imisssleeping · 19/05/2010 21:28

Spotty I would pay extra if the machine told me to fuck off when I'd finished.

PickUpYourPants · 19/05/2010 21:54

Use them all the time - always do something 'wrong' and have to wait for the helper.
DC13 & 10 use them too.
Best for me was trying to buy a Cibatta Roll in Tesco. It is under 'roll - cibatta'
YABU

mumbar · 19/05/2010 22:05

Yeah they are a pain in the arse but if they bother you theres always plenty of tills where they'll pack for you too!!!

SixtyFootDoll · 19/05/2010 22:15

I hate them
I am incompetent at them
and feel like my mum
when I cant find where my change is coming from
