To think public sector workers

Are being 'punished' for mistakes made by bankers / previous government? I work for my LA and at the moment everything around making savings is centred around our jobs and salaries! People think we earn loads, get bonuses etc etc - I certainly don't and I work unsociable hours with no bonuses and a average wage which pays my mortgage and bills...

So AIBU to feel like this or do I deserve it because I work in the public sector!

"17 to 20%? Yes, that's right, the taxpayer."

Yup, I know that. Its part of my pay. Just as having BUPA was part of my pay when I worked in the private sector.

"And where do these employers get the money to pay that 17 to 20%? Yes, that's right, the taxpayer. "

100% of my pay packet comes from the tax payer. Who else do you think pays for schools, hospitals etc. Its a terrible burden to the tax payer. However if you stop paying public sector workers completely then there will be no public services.

For all those slagging off the public sector - if you think it's so bloody easy and wonderful come and join us by all means. Never seen so much bitterness from grown women in all my life.

We make our own career choices and if like many have said, there were thousands of jobs created for the sake of it why didn't you all leave your terrible private sector jobs to come where the grass is greener?

BoffinMum · 19/05/2010 22:29

Don't see many links to articles about how low public sector pay was in relation to private sector before 2000.

Surely it's swings and roundabouts and these things go in cycles?

"And to those who say that they are more worthy and for working in the public sector and the only real benefit they have is their pension - I thought you were morally superior so wouldn't you just do the job without the extra fancy pension?"

Actually spoldge yes I would personally - I love my job. I'd like an extra bit of pay though to put into a pension in that scenario.

I accept your point that the public sector pensions are probably unsustainable and don't hold my breath that I'll definitely see mine when the time comes if the current climate continues.

I am not morally superior and never claimed to be so - just doing a job which came with a pension in place of the perks my private sector friends enjoyed. That was not a conscious decision either - at 18 a pension was the last thing on my mind. I was just entering a career for the love of supporting and caring for others. The satisfaction which comes from that has never left me and I'd continue to do the job pension or not.

Happy now?

The point is that all of us are being punished for mistakes made by a tiny minority of filthy rich bankers.

And they - the bankers - have got themselves so convinced they can't survive on less than a six figure salary that they actually think it's okay to carry on taking bonuses even though their businesses lost money.

Public v private is a game the rulers get us to play to take all our eyes off the real ball -- which is them screwing all of us over all the time.

I've worked in both, by the way. It's six and half a dozen as far as pay, benefits etc go. But never have I been paid a massive bonus for getting it wrong. No siree.

Following on from thejollypirate's post - the pension wasn't a draw for me either. In fact, pre-registration I was not a member of the scheme as I couldn't afford to pay the deductions (for five years). I suspect it may well be a draw for others though and I don't doubt for a minute that it is a factor in persuading people to stay - and that is important. We need to retain staff. Recruitment is an expensive process.

Splodge - I think there may still be time for you to get a job in the public sector with a final salary pension. Why don't you?
