is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for a peadiatrician appointment?

ds was reffered (aspergers diagnosed by everyone but pead) when he was in reception class, all we needed was for him to see the pead and her to basically sign off on it.... after school and educational psychologists and drs chasing it up today we have his appointment through.. for in june..

ds is now 8!

That's crazy!!!!!!!

I'm going to hazard a guess that you are in Ireland?
I got an URGENT referral a while back that only took 5 months.

Fabulous isn't it?

StealthPolarBear · 17/05/2010 15:33

no yanbu
if they leave it long enough he'll no longer need a paed appointment

biddysmama · 17/05/2010 15:34

lol no i'm not, i'm in lancashire, apparently we were on one drs list for a year then she retired and passed her list onto another dr that already had a waiting list....

And it's gonna get worse with all the cutbacks that are going to be imposed here in this great Emerald Isle.

It's more common than people realise. My DD waited 4over 4 years to see a speech therapist, 2 of my sons waited over 3 years to see a paed and an urgent referral from the community paed for DS3 to see the consultant took 9 months and that was after we had waited 2 years for an assessment through school.

Even once you get to see one, an AS diagnoses takes months and months. My older boys were back and forward between the paed and the child psych for about 6 months before they would confirm what we all knew anyway. And then we were dismissed with no follow up support from anywhere. And I can only imagine that things will get worse with government cutbacks and what have you. OUr OTs here all have over 100 kids each on their books at any one time, not to mention the adults that they have to deal with, so it's no wonder that things take a while.

And the waiting lists in Dublin hospitals are horrendous. Sometimes, the appointment might be cancelled and you don't get informed - after 6 hours driving there!

I work in a small hospital, which is losing it's services one by one, with the intention of closing it so we can be moved to a bigger hospital which is bursting at the seams and cannot cope with it's current workload! I feel so sorry for patients living in this area!

biddysmama · 17/05/2010 15:45

we were planning on moving over there but dad said it would be better to get ds sorted over here first instead of trying to get it done in ireland, with the recession i wouldnt be abe to get work (ta level 3) any way now, my step mums brother got laid off and hes a teacher!
