To think that if you are at Legoland and find a bag with a brand new lego set in it...

...that someone had obviously just bought and then mislaid, you would hand it in?

And that if the person who took DS's new Lego set (bought with his saved up pocket money) is a Mumsnetter, they might return it?

DS knows it was his responsibililty, and is very upset, with himself and the loss of the bag with the box in it. He put it down to have his picture taken by a Lego figure, got distracted and didn't pick it up again. The legoland Customer servioces have been realy helpful, but have not found it in the shop or lost property.

Was this mean - or is it strictly finders-keepers out there???

Mean.

What was it?

SloanyPony · 16/05/2010 20:43

Yes, its mean.

Turns out your trip to Legoland was educational after all.

CarGirl · 16/05/2010 20:46

dd2 left her named expensive water bottle at chessington, it was never handed in. dd3 had her Noddy raincoat stolen off the pushchair at chessington as well that was very expensive had to buy another one off ebay!

lottiejenkins · 16/05/2010 20:47

mean - we were there yesterday and would have handed it in if we found it, did you ask at the collection service in the big shop too, I noticed a security guard dropping a hat off there. so for your ds.

ApocalypseCheese · 16/05/2010 20:54

I don't think sloany was being mean, just stating that their are mean people out there.

lottiejenkins · 16/05/2010 20:56

The bit that wrankled with me with me was "educational" !!!!!!!!!

pigletmania · 16/05/2010 20:57

It is would certainly have handed it in tbh. I did that with a brand new handbad i bought which was about £50. Left it on the bus in the Debenhams bag, nobody handed it in, I guess the person that nicked took it thought their birthday had come early, it was a designer bag. Good thing though it was not one of my more expensive bags though.

pigletmania · 16/05/2010 20:58

Nothing wrong with Sloanys comment, yes Lottie it was educational as in ops boy has learned from his mistake and wil be more carefull next time. I certainly have with my handbag.

muggglewump · 16/05/2010 21:10

Mean, and assuming whoever took it was accompanied by parents, I'm shocked they let the child keep it, unless it was the parents/adults that took it, and then that's just awful.

*says me who has a major issue with her DD stealing but I do not condone it.

DramaInPyjamas · 16/05/2010 21:10

Sloanys comment is fair and probably meant in a lighthearted way.
Of course it's horrible for OP's son..
Any decent person would hand it in.. But life's unfair and there are equally as many people out there who keep what doesn't belong to them.

OP - Did Customer Services offer up a replacement or refund? It would have been a nice thing to do since your DS was so upset. x

Bluebell99 · 16/05/2010 21:51

I had something similar happen at legoland when my dd was about three and we bought her a legoland handbag which she subsequently mislaid. We retraced our steps and asked at lost property and it hadnt been handed in. Although tbh it wouldn't have surprised me if they hadn't just put it back in the shop.
Legoland din't offer to replace my dd's bag.
Sorry your ds lost his new toy, don't know how old he is, but maybe would be a good idea for adult to hold the bag until safely back at the car.

littleducks · 16/05/2010 21:57

I lost my purse at Legoland, and when i went to customer services at top of hill to ask after it the people behind me in the queue were waiting to hand it in.

I dont know which bit you were in but many areas are quite outdoorsy/overgrown and a carrier bag (especially if it then got wet) could possibly be mistaken for rubbish.

But then wherever you go there are always some meanies

Dancergirl · 16/05/2010 22:46

I feel so sorry for your ds - poor kid.

CharlieBoo · 16/05/2010 22:55

That is shit and I'm sure put a big dampner on the day for all of you. We would have 100 percent handed it in. Even my ds who is 5 would know it would be wrong to keep another childs brand new misplaced toy. Did u buy him something else? I think I would have had to..... I am way too soft.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 16/05/2010 23:00

That's very mean, and sad. the person who has it must know that it belonged to a child, which makes it meaner still

Was it something you can only buy at Legoland, or is there any chance of being able to get him another? I am also soft, and would probably replace it. Maybe he could do some extra chores to offset the cost?

It's one of those situations where the only thing that helps is a belief in karma

BoysAreLikeDogs · 16/05/2010 23:02

Blu that is grim indeed

poor DS

wonka · 16/05/2010 23:05

We had something stolen from the back of our buggy in Legoland. I had but the bag handles under the backpack straps somebody had unstrapped one half of the backpack but couldn't remove it as it was buckled to the buggy.. but they took DS's birthday present.. If it happened today maybe you'll be lucky and it will be found by the cleaners later! Might be worth a ring again tomorrow?

Blu · 17/05/2010 08:58

at the amount of active staling that goes on - how do people live with themselves?

DS is so good - he never badgers or hankers after things, but he was over the moon with his Tri Droid Star wars thingy (£25 before discount!!), and he was adamant that it was all his fault - even though I thought his Dad might have kept an eye out too. I had snook off to buy another set secretly for his forthcoming birthday.

And oh, yes, a very effective education for us...after a day yesterday when he was mournfully awaiting another e mail from Customer Services (we had several - they were v prompt and attentive) we gave into our soft hearts and said that they HAD found it and rather than us pay P&P for it, they would send a refund voucher.....and off to Argos 5 mins before it closed. Probably wouldn't have been so soft hearted if he wasn't taking his mistake so seriously, and with luck on our side, it could have been found and had a natural happy ending.

I'd still rather have a disappointed child than a child who is brought up to think that it's OK to keep something like that.

And obviously MN-ers are a caring an honest lot - not sure how other parents can fail to imagine the upset of another child.

Oh well, onwards and upwards!

Maybe its lying somewhere undiscovered? Maybe try phoning in a few days to check if its been found by a member of staff at the end of the day or the next day?

Blu · 17/05/2010 09:13

Memoo, that's what we were hoping - but it was propped up on a big Lego model in the centre of the shop - it can clearly be seen in the photo that DS pout it down to pose for - and we sent that to Legoland. It was on Saturday.

We have not given up hope, but have chalked it up to experience.

Goodness - Legoland even provide a 'buy now, collect later' service so that you can pick things up just as you leave, to avoid this very scenario! More fool us!

Eve in the depths of gloom yesterday, DS was clear that we had had a really fun day out, and we talked about the only way to avoid the risk of something horrible happening was never to do anything nice in the first place. So it was educational!

Thank you all for your sympathy and understanding

BendyBob · 17/05/2010 09:20

That's such a shame. Poor little chap.

We lost the school bear on a day-trip to a theme park. No-one ever handed it in despite me phoning back for days asking.

I can't believe it was picked up. I mean why would anyone keep it? How can you keep something and enjoy it knowing how upset another child is likely to be?

OrmRenewed · 17/05/2010 09:28

Sorry to hear that Blu - yes I'd have handed it in of course. I'd be soft and buy him another - try Amazon for Lego if you are as well.

SeaTrek · 17/05/2010 10:44

YANBU - it was mean and stealing.

Don't give up hope yet though. My friend left her handbag in the trolley when shopping at tesco once. Realised when she got home. Went straight back. Lady on customer servies said that no one had handed it in.

My friend checked again in the morning. Then, desperate, rang again in the evening and it was then - it was handed it straight away! Just different members of staff looking in different places.

He was really unlucky that the next person to come across it was a thief
