is a recipe for disaster?

Not necessarily: if they're just using the word 'bar' to mean a table where the sell Panda Pops and crisps to the children then it's fine.

muggglewump · 16/05/2010 13:44

Serving alcohol for the parents I presume?
I can't think it's necessary, but don't think it's a problem either.

Our discos are held in a Social Club with a bar but the bar of the room that's used is not open, just the small hatch/tuckshop part.

RedRedWine1980 · 16/05/2010 13:45

Says the bar will be selling beer and wine

sounds ok to me

cheesesarnie · 16/05/2010 13:47

i think thats awful!

kolacubes · 16/05/2010 13:49

Not against it, but don't see it as being necessary. Same category as alcohol at children's parties. I don't need the alcohol, and don't see as a requirement for every type of party.

true-depends if the disco is for parents or children.

MrsHarkness · 16/05/2010 13:52

Is it a disco for the kids or is it a fundraising disco ie parents/adults only kind of thing?

borderslass · 16/05/2010 14:04

When my girls where at primary school they did a family disco at halloween when they served alcohol to parents never caused any problems.

BAFE · 16/05/2010 14:17

it really does depend on what the parents at that particular school are like.

Firawla · 16/05/2010 14:19

I think thats really bad, not that i would want mine going to disco anyway really, but why on earth do they need alcohol for children?! or for adults who are supposed to be supervising children? ridiculous...

fluffles · 16/05/2010 14:21

it is a children's disco or a 'family' disco?

family disco with drinks for adults and all aadults are encouraged to come i think is fair enough.

but if it's mainly a kids disco and adults are just chaperones then not so good.

I dont see the problem (on the assumption that the beer/wine is for parents and not 7 year olds)

Adults drink alcohol socially. Kids know they do. Big deal.

.........and tbh I would quite like a glass of wine if I had to endure a school disco

lazarusb · 16/05/2010 15:25

Children have to be accompanied at our school discos (run by PTA) and a glass of wine is the only way I can get through them. There have never been any alcohol related problems (and they only serve adults).

5Foot5 · 16/05/2010 15:38

At DDs primary school they always served wine and beer at Christmas fairs and the summer garden party.

I think it was a good fund raiser TBH

It never caused any problems.

compo · 16/05/2010 15:43

Yabu

it's a fundraiser presumably so by buying a load of cheap booze and selling it for profit is all to the good

we have booze at our summer fair

glass of pimms in the sun is lovely and raises money for the school

win win

tethersend · 16/05/2010 15:46

As a teacher, I think it's not just entirely reasonable, it's a necessity.

Used to work at a school which served wine at parents' evenings though....

compo · 16/05/2010 15:47

'I think thats really bad, not that i would want mine going to disco anyway really, but why on earth do they need alcohol for children?! '

oh my god!! What's wrong with a bit of music and dancing for kids ?! How old are your kids Firwala? Isn't it obvious the alchohol is for the parents?!

muggglewump · 16/05/2010 15:51

I let DD go to her first disco, in said social club when she was in P1 so 5. Some of the other parents were really cat's bummy about it, but I didn't get the problem. She loved it.
I don't think the alcohol is necessary, but nor would I have a problem with it being served to adults.
It's nice to have a glass of something.

JODIEwantsanewname · 16/05/2010 16:03

Gosh, we serve alcohol at our pre-school fundraisers, (mulled wine at the christmas concert, pimms at the sports day etc, etc) I think our village must be full of lushes

FWIW we make the most money off the bar sales and we really struggle for funds here otherwise.

I really don't see the problem, if you don't like it, then don't buy anything.

kitsmummy · 16/05/2010 16:31

God we had alcohol at our kids disco on Friday (parents have to stay there with kids) and it's absolutely fine. It's nice to have 1 or 2 drinks and a chat with other parents whilst watching kids have fun. A kids disco is going to start early and probably only last 1.5 hours, unless the parents are rough as hell they're hardly going to be getting trashed, are they

Goblinchild · 16/05/2010 17:19

If it stops the PTA from stalking teachers to supervise the disco, I'm all for it.
