to give DD's cereal for tea

DD1 has been off ehr food for a few days and DD2 has a temp of over 39.
Any food I offer DD1 is refused, she ate barely anything yesterday and today she has had a bowl of aldi cheerios, peanut butter toast, 2 bites of an apple and 1 bite of a cheese and marmite sandwich.
All she wants is another bowl of cereal, I doubt DD2 will eat anything but she has had much the same with a bite of teacake instead of a sandwich.
That's not bad, is it?!

cereals not bad, i give them what they want when they are ill, somethings better than nothing..

firsttimemum77 · 15/05/2010 16:31

No yanbu - they are both feeling under the weather so it's unreasonable. When my dd is not feeling well she refuses to eat most things except cereal (usually weetabix) so I let her have it - some food is better than no food. When we r not well as adults we don't particularly feel like eating either... So no it's not bad!

firsttimemum77 · 15/05/2010 16:32

Sorry damn iPhone should say it's fine... Not unreasonable!

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 15/05/2010 16:33

Ah, validation
DD1 burst into tears yesterday when I put pesto pasta down and declared herself 'too ill to eat even a teeny bite' and then had ONE spoon of icecream (special treat as she hadn't refused to eat and was not well) and left the rest
She doesn't want fruit or anything, I reckon I have a few days grace before scurvy sets in, haven't I?

Cereal is fine-it's fortified with vitamins anyway. My Mum used to give me custard when I was poorly or marmite toast whatever I could manage.
TBH even when they're not ill if we had a large lunch out for instance I let mine have a bowl of shreddies for tea occaisionaly.
I hope they're feeling better soon.

I sometimes eat cereal for tea! I have once or twice given ds cereal for tea when he was in good health!

mamas12 · 15/05/2010 17:07

Cereals are great.
I have always given dcs cereal for a snack without milk in a cup after cup to munch hile unwinding .

You are giving them exactly what they need. Comfort food that does them good.

i do this when he's had a big lunch & not hungry at night but i don't want him going to bed on an empty stomach iyswim
unless it's sugar puffs i don't see the problem - and even they'd be ok as an 'ill' one off

MunchkinsMumof2 · 15/05/2010 17:56

sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone think Cheerios are the work of the Devil? I give them to ds but my friend looked at me with a withering stare and said that they are full of sugar and should be a "treat" cereal.
tbh, Some days I'm just happy to get him to eat something so would be lost if his already v.v. shortlist of foods was reduced by 1!

blametheparents · 15/05/2010 18:00

Cheerios are not the work of the devil, but there is more sugar in them than a lot of other cereals. Check the box and compare.

I sometimes give creal to my kids for tea if we have had a big lunch (eg roast) and then I can't be bothered to cook anything really, but the kids are peckish before bed.

BelleDameSansMerci · 15/05/2010 18:06

My DD (now 2.8) went through a phase where all she would eat was Rice Krispies. We still have days where that's all she wants. I can't see anything wrong with occasionally replacing a meal with cereal at all. I wish I could make myself do it more often!

MunchkinsMumof2 · 15/05/2010 18:08

sorry voulezvous I meant to add that I think it's fine to give your dc whatever they fancy when they are poorly. Hope they are better soon.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 15/05/2010 18:23

Cheerios are not that bad, unless they are real cheerios and therefore Nestle branded.
Mine are cheapo versions, so obviously fine

DD1 had sugar puffs and then rice krispies anyway, they are much worse than cheerios!
