To think that Labour voters are living in cloud cuckoo land if they think there wouldn't have been severe cuts under another Labour government?

I'm sure I'll get roundly flamed for this, but why are you all so upset about the cuts that the Tory/Lib Dems are proposing? We are screwed financially, absolutely screwed. Labour would be making the same sort of cuts had they ended up in power again. But it seems that Labour voters can't believe that their own party (who caused a lot of these problems in the first place, however you look at it) would be making the same cuts.

It is quite bizarre that there is so much venom directed against the govt for doing the necessary.

YANBU - they were on a spend spend spend mission before....setting a bad example to half the population that live the same way.

Why do people think there is always and endless supply of money

electra · 14/05/2010 13:45

YABU in that people's venom tends to be directed at conservative policies because they appear to many of us to be unprincipled - ie - it's ok to leave those who need help out in the cold but protect the rich. Why shouldn't those who have loads contribute a bit more to the deficit instead of being given tax breaks? It is a simple fact of life that not everyone has the opportunity to become rich - and the idea that if they can't do this they are lazy is, at best, flawed......

That is where the problem lies imo. I agree that any government would need to make cuts and I agree with whoever said on another thread that it seems crazy that VAT was reduced last year.....only for it now to be necessary to increase it. But conservatives aren't bothered about making some people suffer who are in the position they are through no fault of their own.

Strawbezza · 14/05/2010 13:53

YANBU, Alistair Darling himself admitted that the proposed Labour cuts would have been worse than those implemented in the early 80's by the Tories.

I'm hopeful that the coalition can start to address the debt. I really resent paying taxes that go towards the country's interest payments rather than towards supporting public services. I expect VAT will increase. And it wouldn't surprise me if the cabinet's 5% pay cut is implemented for other highly paid public sector workers.

YABU

who says that all labour voters are dismayed about cuts? do you think labour supporters are STUPID and dont understand the defecit?

or, do you think people only voted labour to mitigate against cuts?

stupid post!

electra · 14/05/2010 15:01

For me, I voted for values that are comparable to my own, not because I'm worried about cuts. I have a problem with conservative ideals generally. Way too much of a problem for me to ever vote for them.

YANBU

It has to happen - we just can't carry on the way we've been going. I hope that the cuts that are made are in the right place, and perhaps each party will influence that.

pigletmania · 14/05/2010 18:42

YANBU cut had to be made whether it was under Labour,Tories or Lib Dem, only Labour did not want to advertise it and look unpopular for the election, same with rasing tax.

Fembear I fear that it's pregnancy hormones making me too chilled about pretty much everything at the moment to get worked up. Once PMT comes raging back it'll be a different story!
