To think people who bump ancient threads are really annoying?

Seriously, how does it happen? People trawl through 60 pages of threads and think 'oh that looks interesting, I'll post on that?' Or they take a two year break from MN and click 'threads I'm on'?

Look, don't post on any threads that are not 1- on the first page of a board 2- in active convos 3- a long running thread you are part of or 4- something very useful and informative that you would like to share with more people.

Ancient threads asking for advice on baby names or hen night dilemmas - let them die people. I don't think people need your advice 2 years later....and it bumps threads to the top meaning more people waste their time and keep bumping the bloody threads.

{phew}

I guess people do searches and the ancient threads come up in the search results.

I would assume that people use search to look for whatever they are interested in, see a post that fits them & post on it! I doubt they look at topics & go through all the threads looking for something to bump!

fragola · 14/05/2010 11:05

I presume that people use the search function and then post on the topic. Other forums that I use encourage this, rather than having a millions posts on a similar topic.

The info on them might be relevant to people other than the op of the ancient thread, so it doesn't bother me.

AstronomyDomine · 14/05/2010 11:06

I did once because I'd been on a particular thread (current) and wanted to see how it had gone. I ran a search, clicked on what I thought was the current thread, posted another comment then realised it was actually over 2 years old!!
Not intentional I can tell you.

thederkinsdame · 14/05/2010 11:14

When it happens though, I do find myself wondering on ones with no update 'ooh, I wonder what happened? Did she smack her MIL/make her children go to the party/feed them Greggs pasties?'

tethersend · 14/05/2010 11:14

I once got attacked by the person who resurrected the thread for pointing out it was old.

YANBU

I have seen threads on miscarriages raised years later. There was another one recently on weaning, the baby had started school and another 7year old one on dyslexia where the child would have left school by now.

However, a google search frequently brings up MN threads so I can see how it can happen without the poster fully realising that they are bringing back a very old thread.

toccatanfudge · 14/05/2010 11:51

well actually saying they can't bump something that's not on the first page is a little unfair - as on busy boards such as AIBU and Chat a "new" thread can be half way down the second page by midday of the day it was started!
