I overheard my son's headteacher this morning talking to a parent about the reason they don't have sports day at my son's infant school. Apparently it excludes those who are less able. I say POPPYCOCK and how are we ever going to have any great sports men and women with attitudes like that ffs. thoughts anyone?

A more entertaining answer to the maths competition might be singing competitions. Those wouldn't be boring, would they? A compulsory X-Factor Day with everybody made to participate; I think that could be very popular.

A bit tough on the tone deaf ones or the very shy ones- but hey, life is competitive, and not least in singing.

I will leave now. Ds would be good at the maths one and the singing. Don't want to show off now, that would never do

Interesting discussion - I think its the taking part aspect which should be emphasized and if kids are muttering about so and so on their team well then they need to learn about sportsmanship as well as competition. Its all about the attitude of the school

With regards to comparing with academic achievement - all the kids know who is better academically as they know who is more sporty or arty..

I remember at my school report card you were always ranked in each subject and then a final ranking at the bottom - e.g 29/30 for Math so everyone knew your status in the class and don't get me started on prize day..

Seems a strange reason to stop it, however I know I'd have been thrilled if my school stopped it, I loathed being forced to take part in competitive sport, and instead became a master at skiving sports days.

I think if they changed PE lessons to being less competitive I wouldn't have minded it, instead it was always just salt in the wound. (One darling teacher thought trying to get the shortest girl in the class to jump hurdles on sports day was a good idea )

"I think its the taking part aspect which should be emphasized and if kids are muttering about so and so on their team well then they need to learn about sportsmanship as well as competition. "

That. Definitely. There's usually very little about sportsmanship at sports days. At least in my experience.

"''I have yet to attend a school event where the dunce of the class is set doing equations in front of the assembled school while everybody is tapping their fingers and wondering if it is ever going to end. Can anyone explain why?''

because it's not exciting to watch, cory? "

AAnd watching some poor miserable brat lose again is exciting to watch?
