To get a new 0% card to buy some new clothes?

Hang on before you all flame me, as I am totally anal about money (have a little book thats done every month of incoming/outgoing, I can account for every penny).
I get a 0% card every year and ALWAYS pay it off before the year is out, then start another one and do the same.

I have been living like a peasant on SMP for the last 8 months and I go back to work next month.

On my current 0% card I have about £250 which will be paid by July/August and it runs out in September.

But atm I have no spare money, I have lost 3 stone in weight and would love to go out and just buy a few clothes for summer, say about £150 worth, Im worried that by the time I go shopping we'll be into all the autumn stuff and the summer stuff left will be all rubbish.

So AIBU to get another 0% card to shop on, or should I just keep spending on this one and pay it off by september (trouble is when it goes over £300 I get a bit twitchy [hmm). Or should I pay this one off and wait until thats done before I start shopping

Get another one and splash out - you are obviously very sensible with money so wont go mad and will be able to pay it off.

HmHMMm.

I think as a rule of thumb, it's never great to be paying for something longer than you actually use it. So mortgage: 25 yr loan. Car: 5 year loan. Clothes: Not worth 'borrowing' more than you'll pay off in the month.

They'll look all sad and crumpled, but you'll still be paying the bill.

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 11:51

dont know where you buy your clothes from kif but mine last longer than a month

Clearly you are very responible with money so I say go for it. Credit cards are only bad if you use them with the opinion that aslong as you make the monthly payment you're fine .

ConnorTraceptive · 13/05/2010 11:53

If it's o% interest she won't be paying more than the clothes were worth though?

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 11:54

well I will only make the minimum payment if I had a new one until this one runs out.

Would I be better spending on the current card and clearing it before september (thats 4 months so even at £100 minimum I could clear by then with the extra £150 spending)

Why would anyone flame you?
Sounds like a good idea with me, and as long as you are disciplined and pay it off before the interest free period runs out, then can't see a problem with it.
I have 2 credit cards, and I don't pay interest on either, one has a 0% balance transfer on which I am well on track to pay off the balance on before August when the interest free period runs out, the other is my Egg Money card, which is paid off in full every month. You can't get one of these cards anymore (get 1% cashback on it), and have had it for about 4 years now, and have never paid interest on it - but DH and I use it for all our daily spends (shopping/fuel for my car etc.).

Credit cards are not evil BUT you do have to be very disciplined and sensible with them to avoid racking up charges, they are NOT a way to get you out of debt.

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 12:14

bump, so new card or continue spending on the september card?

OP posts:
Pattertwig · 13/05/2010 12:33

use the present card IF you can clear it in time...

cupcakesandbunting · 13/05/2010 12:45

YANBU.

You have a level-head wrgt money so you know what to pay and when. Not like me who cannot be trusted with a credit card and a shop willing to take my cash.

Treat yourself

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 12:49

great thanks for the replies, I thought everyone would be saying 'noooo if you cant afford it then dont spend'.
I dint have any major purchases coming up and my holiday balance money is safely tucked away in my ISA.

Think I will spend on my current card, then I can clear it as normal and start afresh in september rather than worrying about 2 at the same time.

Yay bring on the shopping

Take me with you!

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 12:50

meet you outside All Saints on sunday then cup

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 13/05/2010 12:52

You won't get much for £150 in All Saints! But who cares?!

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 12:55

lol but i could stretch to a £40 t-shirt.

I am deffo buying a top from coast ive been drooling over (£60) plus a new pair of jeans (£40) so that leaves £50 for maybe a bikini/swimsuit and a couple of summer tops from oasis/warehouse.
Thats the plan anyway

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 13/05/2010 12:59

Ah I work for Warehouse so I get a hefty discount

mosschops30 · 13/05/2010 13:01

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 13/05/2010 13:05

OP posts:
warthog · 13/05/2010 13:07

oh well. i don't think you should.

wait til september and then you'll have the whole winter to enjoy your new clothes. winter is longer than summer. and it looks like we aren't going to get much sun this year so will be a wast imo.

cupcakesandbunting · 13/05/2010 13:14

Don't say that, Warthog. It is only May and we are in for a scorchio. Please don't dampen my hope. It's all I have
