to ask for a discount?

Full story here, shortened version is that we've had a door and window made which are the wrong sizes. Instead of having both door and window fitted by the end of yesterday, the bricklayer has only been able to finish the window this morning and I've got to take half a day off work tomorrow for the glazier to come and fit glass in the door. We've ended up with a board across the back of our house instead of a door for 3 nights (and it's been blimming cold!) which probably invalidates the house insurance.

Given that all this has come about because of the incompetence of the person who measured up, AIBU to ask for a discount on the final cost? On the one hand yes we've got a door and a window which is what we asked for, but on the other the inconvenience has been enormous and the house has had to be left insecure.

Ifthey are reputable they should offer one.

But you should expect one.
I would not hesitate to ask. a department store took too long with my curtain order then made a mistake with the fabric and had to remake them. I still asked for compensation and got £100 gift certificates.
Ifthey don't ffer then just ask what discount they are going to give you. Don't ask for discount, ask how much discount. IYSWIM

I'd say that as it's their mistake, they should offer some kind of recompense for the hassle and potential loss of earnings. Have you asked them what they'd suggest to make up for the mistake?

Haven't asked yet, I did say to the secretary that we'd stopped the original cheque and would be asking for a discount, she said I'd have to contact the boss so am sounding you lot out first to see if I'm actually being reasonable or grasping and compensation-culture!

I would definitely be asking for one.

You were very inconvenienced through no fault of your own.

Go for it. If they have any sense they'll be happy to make it up to you for the sake of their reputation.
