to not understand covering food in salt before youve even tasted it

ok so I know this is a little trivial but at the weeikend DH and I went out for dinner with some old friends and it surprised me the amount of people who, as soon as their dinner arrived just started piling salt on it, then we had some of his footie friends over last night and a few did the same. How do yo know if food needs salt before you even taste it?

Because salt is delicious and lovely.

diddl · 12/05/2010 08:59

Are these people old?
I remember my parents cooking veg. with salt in the water & adding salt on the plate!

SirBoobAlot · 12/05/2010 08:59

YANBU - it really annoys me for some reason Food has enough natural sodium in it generally it doesn't need extra added. Belugh.

NiickClegg · 12/05/2010 09:01

well processed food might
but i tend to know what a potato/carrot or pasta tastes like before i try it - and i know i like salt on them

NiickClegg · 12/05/2010 09:02

dammit must change back

StealthPolarBear · 12/05/2010 09:10

ahhh that's better

SoMuchToBits · 12/05/2010 09:14

My dad used to do this - I could never understand it. I suppose I can if you are just eating say plain potatoes, plain veg and plain meat/fish/chicken with no sauce/gravy whatsoever. But even then it would depend on whether salt had been added to the cooking water (in the case of veg).

But if you are eating something like lasagne, casserole or something with a sauce or gravy on it, then you would have no idea how salty it is until you taste it.

weblette · 12/05/2010 09:16

YANBU dh is like this too at times, until he realises he's getting the stare and stops.

What's even worse is when he chucks Tabasco over anything with a tomato sauce. The dcs now give him grief about that

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 12/05/2010 09:18

YANBU. I think the same thing. I think that it insults the cook to a small degree. Taste something first before you try and disguise the flavour.

EarthMotherImNot · 12/05/2010 09:18

This is probably the single most irritating thing Dh does

I season while I'm cooking the food and I usually taste it before I serve it but he still reaches for the salt before he's even tried it.

We had a chicken curry last night, I prefer rice, he prefers chips so I made both. It was a very spicy hot madras type curry and after I put the chips on his plate he said "hang on before you put the curry over it" and he then put salt on the chips which were about to be covered with curry aaaaarrrrrgh

MuffinToptheMule · 12/05/2010 09:22

I think it's really insulting to the cook. We don't have salt on the table. The only things I add salt to is chips from the chip shop.

diddl · 12/05/2010 09:24

Oh EarthMotherImNot-how can you be with someone who ruins curry by eating chips with it?

TheCrackFox · 12/05/2010 09:25

YANBU - I think it is quite rude. My mum covers everything with pepper, before she has even tasted it.

harleyd · 12/05/2010 09:28

i add salt to absolutely everything, i like it, im gonna die of hardened arteries or high blood pressure but hey, the beer might kill me first

StealthPolarBear · 12/05/2010 09:35

what if you're the cook??

slipperthief · 12/05/2010 09:36

Nope, we get that too from both sets of parents, even though three of the four of them have high blood pressure.

I now hide the salt before they visit.

SoMuchToBits · 12/05/2010 09:37

If I'm cooking, I don't use salt in with the veg. I don't use much salt in other things, but taste as I go and add it if I think it needs it. I do always put salt on the table though, so that other people can add more if they want.

harleyd · 12/05/2010 09:43

i dont tend to add salt while cooking and i dont have it on the table for the kids either, im totally addicted to the stuff tho

i must admit to adding salt - love it, but dont use it to cook vegs with as DC have the same, however DH always covers his dinner with reggae reggae sauce. Not sure what that says aout my cooking abilities!

runnybottom · 12/05/2010 09:54

You might see at as insulting to the cook, someone else might wonder why they should eat food as you like it, rather than as they like it?
Salt is nice, it makes most food taste better. Theres actually a proper chemical and biological reason for this, something to do with aiding the tastebuds to recieve more flavour IIRC.
YABU. If you don't want salt, don't have it, and like so many other things, MYOB if someone else does want some.

StealthPolarBear · 12/05/2010 09:57

yes exactly, i don't add salt to vegetables / potatoes when i cook so why shouldn't i add it at the table? and why taste it first when i'll know it'll taste like an unsalted potato??

SoMuchToBits · 12/05/2010 09:58

But do you cover all your food in salt, or just put it over the unsalted potato?

MrsMellowdrummer · 12/05/2010 10:01

No, the only time you should ever do that is with fish and chips.

In which case, it is the law.
