about their claims that "we are a healthy school"

ds1 has been asking to have school dinners. so i looked on the website and find that at least 3 out of 5 days each week the dessert is some kind of cake, usually with custard.

the vegetarian options for one week consist of:
cheesey veg pie with gravy
plain omelette with new potatoes (Mmmm! inspired)
broccoli cheese
macaroni cheese
veg pie with gravy

I mean... please! a little variety wouldn't go amiss, and what's with the cake?
kids who take packed lunches are banned from having chocolate/nuts etc etc... but school dinners can consist of badly thought out choices followed by cake?

oh, and the icing on the cake (no pun intended), is that they now get stickers if they eat all their lunch. I can't even begin to tell you how angry that makes me

Pisses me off that people are being told what can and can't go into lunchboxes.

YANBU.

Rewards for eating is ridiculous, I'd complain about the stickers too.

I wouldn't have a problem with the cake and custard pudding - I'd have more of an issue with the policing of packed lunches.

I feel your pain OP.

I have a fussy dd who doesn't eat a massive amount, I have tried and failed with a 'eat more!' sticker chart and have decided that, yes, she'll eat as much as she wants to, and why fight against it? She has peaks and troughs and I always know when she is having a growth spurt as she will eat us out of house and home.

She loves fruit and veg, she is vegetarian (her choice) and would at macaroni cheese and the like... I struggle to get sufficient protein and calories into her at times and tbh when she is on a picky eating phase cake and buns can be important in her diet, also chocolate and nuts. I see some fights with school policy ahead...

Will watch your thread with interest...

She starts school in September

so all of you would be happy to be served up a plain omelette and new potatoes for a meal?

really? cos i wouldn't, and i don't expect my child to be either

"I'd be deeply tempted to have a look at the menu in advance, and send a packed-lunch child in with a cold veg pie or pasty and a flask full of gravy, together with a piece of cake and a little tub of custard."

It would be a lot of work, but SO worth it to do that for the entire 4-week menu cycle.

lol yes maybe i should do that. ds1 complains if he doesn't get a sandwich though lol

the menu doesn't seem too bad to me, i wouldn't particularly have a problem although i do think the banning items in lunchboxes has gone too far

pippylongstockings · 11/05/2010 19:50

Yes, our school is a healthy eating school - we are often reminded via the monthly newsletter not to place crisps or chocolate etc in packed lunch and then a sample of puddings for hot dinner this week include - chocolate cracknel, chocolate slice with chocolate sauce, shortbread biscuit with custard - so why the fuss about being so healthy eating ?

Today I packed my son - marmite sandwich, tomatoes, cheese and crackers and an apple. He ate his sandwich and cheese and cracker he left eberything else - he often does this I prefer him to have hot dinners then at least I don't know hwat he has left!

Lonnie · 11/05/2010 19:58

OP a while back I had a letter from the school telling us all that chocolate wasnt suitable to have in our childrens lunch boxes..

That same day for dessert on the school menu were chocolate pudding....

Hulababy · 11/05/2010 20:00

Believe me, there is no way any child could over eat with a school dinner!

BritFish · 12/05/2010 00:39

i wouldnt be happy to be served up with plain omelette and potatoes, thats why we have school lunches. if you dont like whats on offer, bring your own!
im not a great veggie eater, but my SIL is a vegetarian and is always looking for meal ideas for her DC's for lunchboxes. [she has one v. fussy DD who doesnt like any of the school dinners. apart from one meal that appears every 3 weeks]

thisisyesterday · 12/05/2010 10:30

well yes, and i agree to a certain extent. he does have packed lunches at the moment, but is keen to try school dinners because some of his friends have them, and i think he is tempted by the cakes for pudding!
