what's the deal with preferring your dcs to watch films rather than TV?

because I do, but don't know why, exactly. I mean, no partic reason except that much of CBeebies annoys the bejesus out of me.

But I seem to remember a thread on here once implying that parents who favour DVDs over TV are smug and horrible Kept meaning to read it but never got around to it.

Can someone fill me in?

No, no, I don't think she is that young. She is in her 50s imho.
I love the way she deals with Talullah, who is obviously not the brightest of the group.

Penthesileia · 10/05/2010 11:48

Ah, so you think she is an aristocratic English eccentric who still has he teddy, à la Brideshead Revisited? Interesting...

Penthesileia · 10/05/2010 11:50

Sorry OP for Maisy hijack.

To answer your question: I prefer DVDs because I'd rather watch Shaun the Sheep continuously on DVD, or Wallace and Gromit: WereRabbit, etc., than CBeebies.

Ivykaty44 · 10/05/2010 11:51

No adverts, even bbc advertise other programs that are not suitable. Adverts let into your home things that they might not know about even at school it may not come across.

my dd1 7 2 have both watched tv but not a great deal, though dd2 was mad on grease for about two years and would watch that rather than anything else.

Francagoestohollywood · 10/05/2010 11:56

Yes Penthe~!

I let DD watch more DVDs than CBeebies as well usually. Partly because I quite enjoy some of her films (I like Bolt and love the Gruffalo) and partly because it is a bit easier to turf her out of the house afterwards to go an do something.

I'm trying to get her to have less screentime anyway though and cursing DH because he taught her how the remote control works...

DD watches more DVD's as when she was a toddler we didn't have freeview so no access to Cbeebies, DS watches more Cbeebies but only really interetsed in Chuggington and ITNG

duffpancake · 10/05/2010 17:12

We don't have a TV but dh is on a mission to hook dd on all the programmes he watched growing up, so she watches Fingerbobs, Hector's House, Mary Mungo and Midge etc. on the computer. She absolutely loves them but I do worry that when she gets to the age where kids talk about these things that her peers are going to think she is from a distant galaxy (or the late 60s).

sallyJayGorce · 10/05/2010 18:28

We didn't have a TV connection for nearly a year so only just got CBeebies and they don't have the habit. They did watch DVDs. I used to work in the film industry so am keen on film and like introducing the children to good films - anything from Toy Story to The Red Balloon. They watch a bit of Cbeebies - most popular with my 2 year old girl. My 6 years old girl would rather read (be read to) than watch anything and my son (4) prefers choosing a film.

bobdog · 10/05/2010 19:33

Hello Duffpancake, your dd is welcome round here we've just been thru a Willo the Wisp phase and Mr Benn, Trumpton, Trapdoor, Clangers, etc. are popular.

We're a dvd & iplayer control freak house. I like the 70/80s stuff because it's very slooow and it calms the kids down in a storytelling fashion.

It's still screen time so we're trying to enjoy good weather outside stuff. It's so much easier in the summer.

Arcadie · 10/05/2010 22:28

Because I can bear to sit through "Cars" "Nemo" "Flushed Away" "Were Rabbit" "Ratatouille" "Ice Age" etc etc etc with the DCs without wanting to shoot myself in the head. The same cannot be said for Waybuloo or Night Garden however.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 11/05/2010 07:30

Meh

Mine watch TV and DVDs, they're watching Spongebob Arsepants at the mo.

I'm presuming that makes me a bad parent?

KleineMaus · 11/05/2010 08:51

Would anyone care to suggest good DVDs for a fairly mature almost four year-old? He's decided he's too old for CBeebies now, and has graduated onto CBBC but the vast majority of it is still way too old for him.

Fel1x · 11/05/2010 09:13

I prefer tv to DVDs I have to say.
DS1 has slightly obsessive tendencies and if watching a DVD will want to watch the same one every time for weeks and weeks at a time.
(I now cannot bear to watch Monsters Inc, we overdosed on that one)
So, cbeebies has more variety, which is good for both of us!
Plus the DVDs that DS would watch are usually just cartoons and on cbeebies at least the programs have some kind of 'learning' part to it. DS watches alphablocks which teaches phonics and the cooking ones etc

MoChan · 11/05/2010 09:21

I don't think TV is educational, but I like to think I'm educating my dd to like good stuff instead of whatever random thing comes next.

That said, we watch selected (pre-recorded) bits of cbeebies, as well as stuff from other channels. But mainly dvds of one kind or another.

We try not to watch too much tv generally, though. I find the right programme has a calming effect on my insanely active dd, however.

Francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2010 14:18

I totally agree with Mochan attempt to "educating" the children to like good stuff, be it a good plot, good graphics, colours etc etc etc

Bobdog, my dc (nearly 6 and 8) still watch Mister Benn with joy. They also used to watch Bagpuss, Rainbow, Button Moon etc etc when we were in the UK.
