To be sick of inverted snobbery

Why do people think it is fine to make derogatory and sweeping statements about the 'wealthy' that they wouldn't dream of making about people of more modest means? For some people, wealth = greed.

People are individuals, some rich individuals are probably horrible and mean, but some that I have got to know through my work are nice and quietly philanthropic - they are just people at the end of the day. They eat, sleep and worry about things just like anyone else.

I am an ordinary working mum so I won't be making the sunday times rich list any time soon btw .

Pag your son sounds lovely.

Orm, why differentiate between types of snobbery? Yes, people with money may find it easier than those without to buy their way out of a sticky situation. The poor and vulnerable should get good financial support and that's a hallmark of a civilised society. But it doesn't make inaccurate generalisations about the wealthy (or about any other group of people) right or justified IMHO.

bugger, wrong thread

Bonsoir · 04/05/2010 12:15

I think a lot of people find it easier to think that rich people must be greedy and exploitative rather than clever and hard working - it makes people with ordinary lives and incomes feel better about themselves.

Nothing like making a virtue out of one's own limitations .

expatinscotland · 04/05/2010 12:40

'Did I touch a nerve there expat?'

You may wish so. Fact is, excepting people in public office, most people don't really give a damn about much besides themselves and their own.

Obviously, though, some have an inflated sense of self-worth and as a result conclude that everyone is jealous of them, noticing them, etc. It's a known part of psychological development in adolescence, however.

OrmRenewed · 04/05/2010 12:41

Well because you did in the OP. This was a thread bemoaning inverted snobbery in particular.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2010 12:42

these trolls are getting tiresome, Orm, in the run up to the election .

flockwallpaper · 04/05/2010 16:21

orm I am highlighting a particular type of snobbery that a lot of people seem to think is okay and justified. I don't and it seems others agree. Snobbery is snobbery in all its guises.

expat are you calling me a troll? I took a break from MN but I've been around for ages if you actually made the effort to look.

Agree with you OP.

flockwallpaper · 04/05/2010 16:23

And of course people in public office never act out of self interest

'thoroughly approve of people who have got rich by working hard, creating a company, creating wealth and creating jobs. They pay company tax and personal tax and their employees pay tax.

This energy and vision is surely to be welcomed and encouraged.

I just wish I had the energy and/or the vision. But I don't so I will never be on a rich list.'

Hmmm I know quite a few people who fit that description and they are, without exception, all charming on the surface, but really devious exploitative bullies.

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 04/05/2010 16:37

"I think a lot of people find it easier to think that rich people must be greedy and exploitative rather than clever and hard working - it makes people with ordinary lives and incomes feel better about themselves."

Maybe. But there are many more clever and hard-working people in this country (or any other) than will ever become rich through their efforts.

OrmRenewed · 04/05/2010 16:48

Yes but you just said "why differentiate between types of snobbery?". I think they are both fairly vile.

bronze · 04/05/2010 16:51

Pag your son sounds fantastic. Even if his room is a mess

I know people who are rich by working hard, creating a company, creating wealth and creating jobs. They pay company tax and personal tax and their employees pay tax. They are NOT charming on the surface but devious exploitative bullies underneath.
They are generous to a fault, and give of their time and money a plenty.
