he doesnt cut back on food... no matter how much he rides his new bike

dps bought a bike to go to work on, from his mums house where he will drop his car off in the morning...

mil lives near work and gets up at 5am..(i wont!) to make him breakfast, and to be fair stop him from waking me and the kids up at 4 am! she makes him breakfast... then he goes butty shop at 10ish.. then back to his mums for dinner and she makes him a full meal, pie, chips and peas, fry up that kind of thing.... then he eats fruit for a snack and get home at 5.30, we have a homemade meal at 6....

he's not losing any weight but complaining about it

that is a lotta, lotta stodge!

What work does he do?
How overweight is he?
Has he got any medical problems etc?

can't he take a low fat healthy wholegrain snack to work instead of the butty shop? that will save money aswell.

what does his mum make him for breakfast?
cooked brekkie is good, so long as its not fried, greasy shit etc.
if shes the type to make a full english, can she not just give him one of everything, i egg, i sausage, i toast etc.

He also needs an afternoon snack around 2-3 ish, i bet then he won't want a full dinner with you at 6.

If his mum won't cut down the portions, you will have to make up for it when he eats meals with you.

mazzystartled · 30/04/2010 11:20

so he is having 4 meals and a snack each day
that's a lot
he could either try a bit of portion control with everything, if he needs regular feeding, (it IS a long time between 5am and "lunch") or you could downscale your evening meal/ stick with fish/chicken/veg/salad or homemade veg soup.

biddysmama · 30/04/2010 11:22

thats what i thought.... but he eats fruit which is apparently good lol

i eat with dd so breakfast, snack, sandwhich, snack, big meal, supper.... 9 plus i'm pg and bf and active!)

yes hes over weight, he works a machine in a factory so not active really

he says its too warm in there to take sandwhiches plus his mum enjoys babying looking after him since shes stuck at home with the misery fil

he eats the same as the kids at home which is good stuff, if i do say so myself lol

I agree about the evening meals you cook. My DH doesn't eat that amount of stodge but despite cycling to work he can't shift the extra weight. So I'm really trying to think about what I cook for him at home. Will he take a packed lunch to work instead of eating less healthy options? (would also save money!)

twolittlemonkeys · 30/04/2010 11:24

Cross post, ice pack in his lunchbox, problem solved. I reckon he's making excuses.

traceybath · 30/04/2010 11:29

He definitely needs to eat less to lose weight.

Also to get his metabolism going he should cycle on an empty stomach in the morning and then have a healthy breakfast when he gets to work.

My DH cycles a lot - over a 100miles a week and only loses weight when he cuts down on food and he's a health nut.

biddysmama · 30/04/2010 11:32

i can see this bike getting left in his mums garage soon and never seen again

i can bet you the pies are filled with butcher floor meat and sat fat, can't she just give him something healthier now the summers here, jacket, beans, good sausages, a bit of salad/cheese?

and maybe a bowl of porridge would be better than a fry up at breakfast.
Boiled eggs are good for quick snacks.
and yes he is making excuses.

StayGoStayGo · 30/04/2010 11:38

Good lord - Dh goes to the gym and was shocked his 20 mins of cycling or whatever burnt about 200 calories. 2 pieces of bread basically. You need to show him what he is burning off (google it) and what he is putting in.

biddysmama · 30/04/2010 11:41

OTTMummA ... thats what i feed him, last night was (homemade)pizza and jacket potatoes, i make everything from scratch and his mum doesnt, so even if he's getting the same there as he is at home, he isnt (iyswim)

OMG thats a lot of food.

I suggest porridge in the morning, it will keep him feeling full for longer, skipping breakfast sounds like a bad idea, my understanding is that slows your metabolism..

If your MIL wants to cook things for him, is there any way you could show her a healthier way of doing it?

StepSideways · 30/04/2010 12:33

Last time I looked it up, it was 600 calories for very brisk cycling, probobly more like 500, possibly as low as 300 for a more leisurely cycle.
