to think that basing your holiday selection on internet reviews is pointless?

We're in the process of deciding on a holiday. Every time I find a nice hotel/resort, DH trawls the internet for reviews. Inevitably he finds some crap ones. Based on this, he then rules out the hotel. It doesn't matter if 99% of people say how clean/lovely the food is/polite the staff are, the second DH comes across one that is negative, that's it off the list. AIBU in thinking that you can't base a holiday decision on one narky person complaining that a resort in Spain is 'too Spanish friendly'?

yanbu
i use reviews to see what the majority think, plus if the odd person says "ask for a quiet room at the front" etc
smoe people are serial complainers though

scurryfunge · 29/04/2010 12:08

People have different expectations of holidays so any review will be subjective. I do trawl tripadvisor and the like but tend to ignore a lot of the drivel on there...some people lke to whinge

I do that too, but have learnt to balance them out. If there are lots of normal sounding positive reviews, you can ignore the nutjobs people who will complain about everything.
I looked up where we are going before I booked it. The first tripadvisor review was someone complaining that the campsite staff refused to speak english, preferring to converse in French. In France, oddly enough.

Read reviews for sure, but read them with a good filter. And tell him at least it will be poultry free for a week or two!!

Where are you thinking of going?

TheAgentZigzagLoonyParty · 29/04/2010 12:27

I think internet reviews are brilliant, before the internet you really had no idea what the place was really going to be like until you got there.

I don't get too hung up on negative reviews though, sometimes the things they're complaining about perhaps wouldn't bother me.

Like Mint I just want somewhere cheap and cheerful clean and comfortable.

Litchick · 29/04/2010 12:30

You can easily weigh up what are real problems and what are things that wouldn't trouble Madonna.

I like Tripadvisor and always review when we get back from anywhere.

They are useful - but most people only
complain review when they have had a problem. You're looking at a pre-selected population

ChickensHaveSinisterMotives · 29/04/2010 12:38

We're looking at Tenerife, and I want to go all inclusive because I want a holiday too (Dammit!). DH is the worlds fussiest eater, and is very suspicious of the whole 'buffet meal' thingy. Sigh.

I always read reviews - then accept that some people like to moan for the sake of it, most people are happy to complain but not to praise and often the stupid things they moan about wouldn't bother me anyway!

On the otherhand if the majority of people say somewhere is crap then I'd stay well away!

BertieBotts · 29/04/2010 12:41

You have to look at the negative reviews - that way you get a real feel for the place. E.g. the one that said "Too Spanish friendly" or "Too remote, nothing to do but sit on the beach" - that might be a good thing in your book. But if someone reviewed saying "They had bedbugs and I got food poisoning" then fair enough to strike it off the list!

Positive reviews are not as useful in the slightest.
