TV in the spre room for MIL

My PIL comes to stay about 6 times a year - sometime for up to a week. They love TV.

We have 3 Tvs in the house already - one in the living room, one in the playroom and one in mine & DH's room.

MIL has asked to have one in the spare room.

When they're here I let them watch whatever they want to.

I don't really want another TV in the house, and we certainly don't need one. BUt MIL is helping us a lot with the children and I kind of see that she'd like to sit in the room and watch what she wants and I'd hate to be considerd inhospitable.

£250 is pretty good

Samsung make good TVs as well, so this seems like a bargain. And presumably you will have other guests who may also appreciate having their own tv.

Hmm as she is there a lot and as she is helping with childcare then I don't think its too unreasonable. We all have our little quirks, DH loves to listen to Radio 4 at deafen level in the shower, gets quite upset if he uses my shower as no radio in it.

Better than my father who hogs our communal telly when he is at our house.

Wouldn't spend £250 on it though, get the cheapest you can.

However have to say that I can't see other guests using it, in all the times I have stayed at peoples houses I have never felt the need to watch TV in the bedroom.

I wouldn't want constant TV in the house and would find a guest who just wanted to watch TV when they came to stay really rude.
Luckily both lots of relatives aren't TV watchers, I'd find a TV addict visitor a pain. Different if it's a particular programme you want to watch, but not blanket all day coverage.

£250! Good? I was thinking £50 - 100 tops. Shows how long it was that I last bought a TV.

Do a search for digi box (used) in ebay - you should get a lot of second hand tv and box options.

pagwatch · 28/04/2010 12:39

Ah HotelOTTMumma is only a three star then

But PILs don't only stay one week though do they...it is 6 times a year and visits as long as a week. So a month a year.

I would do it for my family.
I am obviously just nicer

We entertain guests too, walks, dinner, theatre, games. But sometimes people just wantto go and watch shit on tv or read a crappy book or pluck their eyebrows and talk about how crap the linen is.

I'd be a bit worried about a tv in the spare room.

What happens if mil puts the tv on at 6am? Or it's still blaring out at 2am?

It's one thing for an insomniac guest to be reading half the night, but quite another to have your ears assaulted by a late-night Cash In The Attic-fest.

If you buy a tv I'd include a pair of headphones with it.

ninedragons · 28/04/2010 12:49

They probably want to watch porn

BecauseImWorthIt · 28/04/2010 12:52

£250 was one of the first prices to come up when I looked at the site - not to say that you can't get one cheaper.

But surely your MIL is worth it ...

pagwatch · 28/04/2010 12:53

perhaps they wantthe tv noise to cover the noise of their Special Hugs..

Baconsarnie · 28/04/2010 14:15

Can you not just get a wall bracket for the spare room and rig up one of the other tvs while she's staying? Bit of a palaver, I know, but cheaper than getting a new telly! I would get her one though, especially as you've already said yes and she helps out with the children.

Oh, don't be mean and let your parents have a TV in the spare room.

MrsC2010 · 28/04/2010 14:28

I think the big cost will be an aerial hook up though? I think if you would have to put a wall socket in specially you'd be justified in saying no. Otherwise it isn't really a big deal.
