To want a Video games section and the name of the Geeky stuff section changed?

Ryoko · 25/04/2010 13:18

Pretty simple really, I've come on here after being a female gamer for over 25 years to find there is no section for it.

Now I know it's still seen as a mens hobby but if a womens website isn't even going to acknowledge the existence of female gamers on it's discussion boards isn't that pandering to stereotypes?

I don't care if it ends up full of trash posts about advice on Wii fit there should at least be a section in there with the TV chat and stuff.

The lack of a games section got me thinking I find the "Geeky Stuff" section insulting, Geek is an insult used against people seen as strange or morbid so to call the technology section that is to say that any women interested in technology is a freak.

I think there is isn't there? yes one in Products and One in For Sale - granted the Products one is mainly "which games would my 5y old like etc" but I have also seen it used for advice on levels etc.

As a gellow female gamer, there are loads of non-gender specific forums already out there - not sure if there is a burning need for another one here is there? Also, I have no problem being called a geek - non-gender specific so what is the problem?

TrillianAstra · 25/04/2010 13:31

YABU.

If you want a section go to Site Stuff and start a thread saying 'I want a video games section'. If other people come and say they also want one then it will be created.

It's not a big deal, not a conspiracy, not anti-female-gamers. The chicken keepers have clearly been more vocal in their desire for a board than the gamers.

SuSylvester · 25/04/2010 13:32

GEEK

Ryoko · 25/04/2010 13:33

It's still an insult originally coined at freak shows, it's up to you if you find it an insult or not, I personally do along with nerd.

Products what a strange place to put it hardly the place you would look to start a conversation on emm the lady pirates in Lost Planet 2 or something.

There are plenty of TV, product review, general ranting and political forums on the net as well but there are section here for such things too so why not a general gaming discussion section.

Might turn out with some good threads without the input of bots.

Because clearly no-one has asked for one - we get new boards all the time. Stop bitching and go ask nicely.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 'geeky stuff' was a title that was requested by the very people who post on it.

RustyBear · 25/04/2010 13:47

I agree it might well be a good idea, but mainly to get the trash posts about Wii fit (and other video games) out of the Geeky stuff section

Don't know what you'd call Geeky stuff though - 'Tech stuff' would get confused with the Site tech stuff and 'Computer stuff' isn't really accurate, as you'd still get posts about phones and Sky/Freeview etc.

Actually, I don't mind the Geeky label, never having come across anyone who used the word geek to mean morbid -as a librarian, I learned not to be too bothered about stereotyping, and as an ex-librarian who turned into an IT manager at the age of 45 I think I've proved that it really isn't that important.

fabhead · 25/04/2010 13:48

I'm sure it was. I have really never heard of anyone being offended by being termed a geek before but fair enough I suppose if the origins of the word offend you. Perhaps I move in different circles but nowadays, especially with internet entrepeneurs, web 3.0 etc, I think the term geek is used quite respectfully now. It is the people who don't understand technology who are in the minority nowadays, I find, and they wish they were more "geeky"

southeastastra · 25/04/2010 13:50

there is a video games topic. don't understand the geek thing though, i used geeks2go website alot when having pc troubles, they never seemed to mind after all, naming their website it!

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 13:59

Video game section

Calm down.

Re: the word geek I wasn't aware or it being offensive but if you feel it is then mail MNHQ and complain.

DramaInPyjamas · 25/04/2010 13:59

Being a geek is cool these days - 'Geek Chic'.

fabhead · 25/04/2010 14:04

yes I find that too - I work in IT (and play video games) and the other school mums are always saying "oh you're such a geek, I wish I was" when I fix their PC's etc - they are wistful about it. And blokes seem to find it a massive turn on too .......

RustyBear · 25/04/2010 14:07

Maybe the existing video games topic could just be moved to the 'Fun & Games' section - though as far as I'm concerned the various sections are pretty irrelevant - I just use the A-Z list when I'm looking for a topic.

Though this may be because, as an ex-librarian, I find the classification of the topics rather random and annoying anyway....

WebDude · 25/04/2010 14:09

Sorry, but there are plenty who don't think "geek" is negative - take a look at this Venn diagram, and see where "geek" appears.

Had not known about that games section - thanks JackB - but then again, the last 'console' I owned was an Atari 2600 (30? years ago) and I no longer have my rubbery-keypad Spectrum, and much as I might consider a PS3 (as a Blu-Ray player too) I have no modern games system, so had never gone looking.

Rockbird · 25/04/2010 14:11

I like geeky stuff. I'm very much a fan of gadgets, phones, computers etc and have no problem being a geek. I embrace it

fabhead · 25/04/2010 14:13

Oooooh I am definitely a geek then, cool! (with occasional nerd tendencies on a bad day, admittedly)

Ryoko · 25/04/2010 14:21

I'm a games tester, we don't like being called geeks and nerds tis the way of things where I come from. we be gamers.

Section should be technology stuff or gadgets or something.

Kaloki · 25/04/2010 15:15

Geek isn't usually seen as an insult nowadays. I don't mind being called a geek, it encompasses so many of my interests.

Saves me saying "I am a web designer, computer loving, gaming, gadget freak"

RubberDuck · 25/04/2010 15:17

I like geeky stuff - geek or nerd is a compliment in my book... YABVU.

serenity · 25/04/2010 15:26

Happy to be a geek or a nerd, but then I'm more of a backseat gamer who's smitten with shiny tech with buttons, and lights, and touch screens

Have to say though that my BIL was originally a games tester (he's now the network manager or something along those lines) and he is definitely not a geek or a nerd, so I don't think it's what you do as so much as how you're perceived.

WebDude · 25/04/2010 15:48

You're clearly in a category all of your own, Ryoko (and that was meant in a nice way) so no surprise you would not want to be lumped in with 'us' plain geeks.

Indeed, Kaloki... if introduced as "having a tendency to be a bit geeky" I accept that description happily!
