to think that this statement means I CAN have pet chickens, not that I can't?

I want to get 3 chickens.

We live in rented accomodation (outside UK so UK laws not applicable).

Dh has said that I must first clear it with our landlord and the community association .

I have just looked online and the rules state...

"PETS
No animals, fowl, reptiles or insects should be kept within the Community, except domestic dogs, cats, birds and fish which may be kept as household pets, provided they are not kept, bred or raised for commercial purposes."

I triumphantly showed the above paragraph to DH as it clearly states that pet birds are fine, but he insists that it means no fowl allowed and seems to think I am trying to pull a fast one.

He is wrong and I am right.

Right?

but she can use the poo as fertilizer on the garden.

OP, you've just got to check with the landlord.
if they say no, can you get an allotment?

Are they really noisy then? I didn't know that. I thought it was only the rooster who made a racket. I thought chickens would just be a bit clucky.

I am pretty sure fowl includes chickens and turkeys. Fowl covers forest (game) birds as well as water fowl. Whatever the precise definition 'poultry and 'fowl are often used synonymously and am sure that is what the lease means.

IME it is the easy availability and smell of chicken food in the open that attracts rats.

I know you said outside UK but DEFRA will not allow me to class my chickens as pets. If a pet bird dies I can bury it in my back garden, but not a chicken. My chickens can not be classified as pets but only as fowl and fowl aren't allowed to be buried.

And my chickens can be really noisy, not as bad as a cockeral as not as consistent but they can be as loud when they're arguing.

nickelbabe · 24/04/2010 17:27

no, you do have to dispose of chickens properly.

which is weird.

i don't think hens are that noisy, but they live on a farm and it's expected, i suppose.
one way of countering the noise is by putting hedging on the neightbours's sides of the run (outside the proper weldmesh fencing obv) they can also peck at that hedging!

You can have the chickens if they are to live in the house with you as a "household' pet.
